Self Hosted WordPress vs Free WordPress Account

Because i often saw many people keep asking on what is the difference between the self hosted wordpress blog and the free wordpress account. As an ex-Wordpress.com user i’d like to share my own opinion on the differences between those two

Why you should choose free WordPress Blog:

  • Free as in free beer: You don’t have to pay anything to get your blog
  • Unlimited Storage and Bandwidth: You don’t need to worry about your MySQL (database) size (there’s a limit for pictures) and you don’t have to worry about reaching your monthly bandwidth limit
  • No Technical Knowledge Required: You don’t need to upload, installing and maintaining your WordPress installation because they do all the dirty work
  • Tons of Dedicated Server for free: If your site got slashdotted or dugged the chance of your server going down is extremely high, but not in WordPress.com servers
  • Good for Search Engine: Because there’s site wide tag, your blog can get discovered by search engine quite fast and that means you don’t have to do everything by yourself to be recognized by Major Search Engine
  • Can Drive Traffic Easily: Because WordPress using site wide tag just like i said before, you can get easy traffic for your blog because someone can see your site listed on the tag you used on your blog

Why you should choose self hosted WordPress Blog:

  • I want custom plugins, themes, javascripts, etc: If you need to use custom plugins, themes or even embedding javascripts or custom object then self hosted is the way to go. The reason they didn’t allow it on WordPress.com is because of security reasons
  • I want to try to make money: While it is possible (perhaps) to make money using the free WordPress blog if you don’t mind your blog being deleted later if you got caught, it is still better to host it by yourself
  • I know a lot about technical stuff: When you choose to host your blog by yourself, you need to keep maintaining your WordPress installation which is not going to be an easy task especially if you have tons of plugins installed which is created by someone else

And that’s it. To make it simple, the benefit of going to self hosted solution will be much better if you have tons of visitors coming to your blog and hopefully you’re able to monetize it but if you want a total control then going to a self hosted solution would be best regardless if you have tons of visitors or not

  1. Hi, its good paragraph on the topic of media print, we all understand media is a enormous source of data.

  2. Thanks. I read your piece. It definitely helps. I would like to use plug ins, but I really have no desire to host the site. So the free option makes more sense for me. Might be more limited. But given it is a page-a-day calendar for my family and friends, it really doesn’t need to be fancy. (My inlaws have WebTV, so no java is actually *better* for them.)

    1. Hello Michele,

I just rewrite this post entirely because of your comment (i thought there’d be no one reading this) and i don’t like how the post formatted :D

Couldn’t agree more :) because why do you have to pay and maintain your self hosted blog just because you want to install a few plugins if the limited option offers far more benefits and best of all you don’t have to pick up your wallet

  3. I want to know that word press is free or not.
and please help me to create website and wordpress, to earn money quickly, in a nominal investment.

    Thank You.

  4. Pretty nice blog you’ve got here. Thanx for it. I like such topics and anything connected to them. I definitely want to read a bit more soon.

  5. You say that the free WordPress.com gives you unlimited storage and bandwidth. The bandwidth is unlimited the but the storage limit for free accounts is just 50MB. If you need more than that you need to start paying for upgrades.

That’s just another good reason to go with a self-hosted WordPress account.

  6. Since im not really good when it comes to introduction part so i think it’d be best for me to answer your question directly instead :D

Do you think it would be possible for me to have get a free wordpress blog and link my wordpress blog to my own domain and preferred hosting server?

Yes, it is possible but i do not recommend this because it is not allowed by the free wordpress team staff. Previously there are several blogs made just to link from there and they get deleted immediately by the staff

Other than that, it is also useless to put link into your own blog from there (the free wordpress blog) especially if you just created it because there’d be no pagerank or google juice into your newly created blog at wordpress dot com

Can I put ads when I do it that way? if not, how much would I pay for wordpress if that is the set-up I want?

If you use pay hosting service, of course you can do anything you want to your blog, such as placing advertisement, etc .. and of course it is not possible to do this in the free wordpress blog from the wordpress team

About pricing, well that’s depend on the person itself but if you dont really know what you’re doing. There is a team outthere that can set up your wordpress blog for free (basic installation just to make sure your wordpress blog worked perfectly)

That’s all i hope i’ve answered your question

And welcome to the world of blogging :)

I just have a question and I hope you could put your insight about it.

I want to try my luck in blogging to earn some dough thru ads. I already bought a domain and plan to host it at letzebuerg dot net.

Do you think it would be possible for me to have get a free wordpress blog and link my wordpress blog to my own domain and preferred hosting server?
