Copyright www.reaper-x.com | Between using Subdomain and Subdirectory by Reaper-X

Recently i’ve seen various people asking at various webmasters forum out there, whether they should use a subdomain or subdirectory for their own site. And i asked myself, why they should be confused between choosing subdomain or subdirectory ? because like most of you already know that subdomain is just a subdirectory in your site. With the exception that search engine think that your subdomain is a separate site. And that means Google PR on your main domain and on your subdomain would be different

And to make things clear for you, here’s an example from my site. If you type this on your browser address bar : http://www.reaper-x.com/forums you’ll get redirected automatically to http://forums.reaper-x.com. And as you can see from that example, basically my forums is located under subdirectory of this site, but because i prefer Google or anyother search engine to display it as http://forums.reaper-x.com i'm using a permanent redirect using modrewrite and if Google decided to give PR to my forums in the future, all PR goes automatically to the forums.reaper-x.com

But what if i'm using http://www.reaper-x.com/forums instead of using subdomain ? of course the Google juice from this site are going to be passed easily because Google considered it’s as a subdirectory, which means you do not have to wait longer to get pr into your new forums

Although that is depend on your point of view, if it’s for me i prefer to use subdomain rather than using subdirectory because subdomain looks more professional to me and you can manage subdomain easily because everything inside that subdomain is considered to be in the root directory :) .. although it’ll really take sometime before your new subdomain get the Google Juice .. but that’s just my own opinion of course :)

As an addition, if you’re interested on using modrewrite on your subdomain or add-on domain, you might take a look at my previous post about using modrewrite on addon domain / subdomain

Copyright www.reaper-x.com | 301 Redirect can cause traffic drop by Reaper-X

I just read a very interesting information about The 301 Redirect Headache from Search Engine Watch Blog. It says that moving web pages that have been indexed by search engines to a new URL using a 301 permanent redirect can cause serious dips in traffic once the search engines discover that the old page has moved

Other than that Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable highlighted a discussion at Google Groups in which Google's Adam Lasnik claimed that it only takes them a couple of weeks for things to smooth out

Here’s what Adam Lasnik said at Google Groups Discussion for Webmaster :

There's no universal/intentional sandbox. But, as Matt has noted and MRG has quoted (hey, that kinda rhymes), there are algorithms which have a sandbox-like effect on some sites

301s pass PR and related signals appropriately. Usually takes a couple of weeks for things to smooth out, though

And here’s what MRG said at that Google Groups :

The only thing I remember about the "sandbox effect" was something said by Matt Cutts when he made a reference regarding how webmasters go about promoting/marketing their sites. It was implied that the more you try to get traffic in other ways, the more Google will notice it and this alone could override the effect. It was also implied that the true goal of whatever had been put in place wasn't to reproduce such 'sandbox' but that this came about as a side effect, which make them very pleased

So the conclusion from the above discussion is, if you’re thinking on buying a new domain and want to redirect your previous domain to the new one, you’ll notice some traffic drops. Because it takes couple of weeks to pass PR to the new domain. Although in reality in takes couple of months or more to pass that PR to your new domain

A good example is .. if you previously using wordpress dot com subdomain (this is the default) and at later time you decided to bought / use the wordpress dot com domain mapping features, you’ll notice traffic drop

Copyright www.reaper-x.com | Making Money from Blog with Pagerank by Reaper-X

Almost every webmaster already know about Google Pagerank. And thanks to it there are various opinion on whether pagerank should be used to judge a website value. Some of them are saying that the most important thing in a website is it's content, while some other says that pagerank is the first thing to look when judging a website (indirectly, and the truth is i'm included in this category too :D )

And what about Alexa Rank ? .. well most people always said to not trust Alexa rank because they’re also not providing accurate result for your website statistic. And that’s simply because Alexa rank can be manipulated easily.

But let’s put that aside, shall we ? .. okay .. at first when i'm still building this website, my site didn't have a pagerank (or at least it’s not appearing on the Google Toolbar or many other site that provides service to display your site pagerank), and of course with that status i'm having difficulty especially if i want to submit this site to various directory (although some of them are nice by giving a free link, but most of them require you to have a pagerank first), doing some link exchange, etc

But the worse part is, if you’re trying to monetize your site by submitting your site to various advertisers. They always check your site pagerank first (except for Google adsense of course, because adsense always accept any site as long as your website is using english language or any other language as long as it’s still supported by adsense), and some of them also check your Alexa statistic. And the results is, if your site doesn't have a pagerank or low alexa rank .. you can be sure that they’re going to reject your website

And now what if your site already has a pagerank on it ? and even better your site get a pagerank of 4 and above ? Simple .. you can do various method to make money from it. But the easiest way is of course selling ad space on your site, such as text link or place the advertisers banner on your site. You can try offering your ad space from various online forum

But what if you don't like or don’t want to advertise your site in every online forum by yourself ? It’s easy, you can simply join third party site that is automatically offering your site to various advertisers, and the best part is you don't have to do anything because all you have to do is just wait. And for this part i recommend Text Link Ads (aff) because they’re the easiest and all you have to do is just placing their code on your site

Okay, that is all about using your pagerank status to make money from it, but please keep this in mind. Having a good pagerank status doesn't guarantee your site will be making lots of traffic because Google pagerank value always changed (dynamically) although the toolbar value is only exported after several months at Google update

Is it that important ? by Reaper-X

It’s been a while since i started my first blogs ever on 6 July 2006 which located at <a href="http://reaperxzr.wordpress.com/"title="reaperxzr.wordpress.com" target="_blank" rel="me">reaperxzr.wordpress.com, and now i’ve started my second blogs at <a href="http://reaperxzr.daria.be/"title="reaperxzr.daria.be" target="_blank" rel="me">reaperxzr.daria.be. But still i don’t know much about blogrolling / blogroll and such stuff. I only know its concept (which is the same concept like link exchange) but still do not know on how to get someone else to blogroll with me (since most of them only want to exchange link with a Google PR of 3 and above)

I dont really know if blogroll is important or not, but one thing im sure of Link Exchange does increase traffic to your site / blogs / page (although not that much, since they only care about their page rank). And after reading several website about blogroll / link exchange they only care to blogroll with someone that has a minimum Google PR (Page Rank) 3 / 4. At first i though Google PR was something really important but after using Google Toolbar, i think there’s no big difference between a site with Google Page Rank >= 1 and Google Page Rank 0. For example try searching for Reaper-X using Google or try searching for download windows genuine activation tool (this is based by the search query from the visitors that came to my site) or other keywords which is related to my main page / blogs / site. And you’ll see that my page that doesnt have a page rank can still be on the top 10 google search or at least can be found on google.

And the question is … do you really need a pagerank ? I dont think so, since most visitors only care about the content of your site and if you offer unique content they’ll be back to your site no matter what. But the most important thing is you are using the correct keywords for your article / posts since the correct keywords leads you to the top or at least can be found on search engine. And if you’re using Theme created by someone else try opening the page using a Text Based browsers like Lynx since that’s how search engine looks your site, they only search for keywords.

And the conclusion is there’s no need to worry about pagerank and such stuff, think about your content first and use keywords wisely so your site can be found on major search engine and you’ll have returning visitors daily to read your content. And one thing for sure, if you has a lot of blogroll on your site that means you has alot of friends out there, unlike me ;)
