Copyright www.reaper-x.com | Between using Subdomain and Subdirectory by Reaper-X

Recently i’ve seen various people asking at various webmasters forum out there, whether they should use a subdomain or subdirectory for their own site. And i asked myself, why they should be confused between choosing subdomain or subdirectory ? because like most of you already know that subdomain is just a subdirectory in your site. With the exception that search engine think that your subdomain is a separate site. And that means Google PR on your main domain and on your subdomain would be different

And to make things clear for you, here’s an example from my site. If you type this on your browser address bar : http://www.reaper-x.com/forums you’ll get redirected automatically to http://forums.reaper-x.com. And as you can see from that example, basically my forums is located under subdirectory of this site, but because i prefer Google or anyother search engine to display it as http://forums.reaper-x.com i'm using a permanent redirect using modrewrite and if Google decided to give PR to my forums in the future, all PR goes automatically to the forums.reaper-x.com

But what if i'm using http://www.reaper-x.com/forums instead of using subdomain ? of course the Google juice from this site are going to be passed easily because Google considered it’s as a subdirectory, which means you do not have to wait longer to get pr into your new forums

Although that is depend on your point of view, if it’s for me i prefer to use subdomain rather than using subdirectory because subdomain looks more professional to me and you can manage subdomain easily because everything inside that subdomain is considered to be in the root directory :) .. although it’ll really take sometime before your new subdomain get the Google Juice .. but that’s just my own opinion of course :)

As an addition, if you’re interested on using modrewrite on your subdomain or add-on domain, you might take a look at my previous post about using modrewrite on addon domain / subdomain

Copyright www.reaper-x.com | 301 Redirect can cause traffic drop by Reaper-X

I just read a very interesting information about The 301 Redirect Headache from Search Engine Watch Blog. It says that moving web pages that have been indexed by search engines to a new URL using a 301 permanent redirect can cause serious dips in traffic once the search engines discover that the old page has moved

Other than that Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable highlighted a discussion at Google Groups in which Google's Adam Lasnik claimed that it only takes them a couple of weeks for things to smooth out

Here’s what Adam Lasnik said at Google Groups Discussion for Webmaster :

There's no universal/intentional sandbox. But, as Matt has noted and MRG has quoted (hey, that kinda rhymes), there are algorithms which have a sandbox-like effect on some sites

301s pass PR and related signals appropriately. Usually takes a couple of weeks for things to smooth out, though

And here’s what MRG said at that Google Groups :

The only thing I remember about the "sandbox effect" was something said by Matt Cutts when he made a reference regarding how webmasters go about promoting/marketing their sites. It was implied that the more you try to get traffic in other ways, the more Google will notice it and this alone could override the effect. It was also implied that the true goal of whatever had been put in place wasn't to reproduce such 'sandbox' but that this came about as a side effect, which make them very pleased

So the conclusion from the above discussion is, if you’re thinking on buying a new domain and want to redirect your previous domain to the new one, you’ll notice some traffic drops. Because it takes couple of weeks to pass PR to the new domain. Although in reality in takes couple of months or more to pass that PR to your new domain

A good example is .. if you previously using wordpress dot com subdomain (this is the default) and at later time you decided to bought / use the wordpress dot com domain mapping features, you’ll notice traffic drop

Copyright www.reaper-x.com | Making Money from Blog with Pagerank by Reaper-X

Almost every webmaster already know about Google Pagerank. And thanks to it there are various opinion on whether pagerank should be used to judge a website value. Some of them are saying that the most important thing in a website is it's content, while some other says that pagerank is the first thing to look when judging a website (indirectly, and the truth is i'm included in this category too :D )

And what about Alexa Rank ? .. well most people always said to not trust Alexa rank because they’re also not providing accurate result for your website statistic. And that’s simply because Alexa rank can be manipulated easily.

But let’s put that aside, shall we ? .. okay .. at first when i'm still building this website, my site didn't have a pagerank (or at least it’s not appearing on the Google Toolbar or many other site that provides service to display your site pagerank), and of course with that status i'm having difficulty especially if i want to submit this site to various directory (although some of them are nice by giving a free link, but most of them require you to have a pagerank first), doing some link exchange, etc

But the worse part is, if you’re trying to monetize your site by submitting your site to various advertisers. They always check your site pagerank first (except for Google adsense of course, because adsense always accept any site as long as your website is using english language or any other language as long as it’s still supported by adsense), and some of them also check your Alexa statistic. And the results is, if your site doesn't have a pagerank or low alexa rank .. you can be sure that they’re going to reject your website

And now what if your site already has a pagerank on it ? and even better your site get a pagerank of 4 and above ? Simple .. you can do various method to make money from it. But the easiest way is of course selling ad space on your site, such as text link or place the advertisers banner on your site. You can try offering your ad space from various online forum

But what if you don't like or don’t want to advertise your site in every online forum by yourself ? It’s easy, you can simply join third party site that is automatically offering your site to various advertisers, and the best part is you don't have to do anything because all you have to do is just wait. And for this part i recommend Text Link Ads (aff) because they’re the easiest and all you have to do is just placing their code on your site

Okay, that is all about using your pagerank status to make money from it, but please keep this in mind. Having a good pagerank status doesn't guarantee your site will be making lots of traffic because Google pagerank value always changed (dynamically) although the toolbar value is only exported after several months at Google update

Copyright www.reaper-x.com | Google Pagerank Update Today by Reaper-X

It seems Google is updating their pagerank value for various website today (at least at the time i wrote this post). I found it just now when looking at this site pagerank from the Google Toolbar that is installed on my Mozilla Firefox browser .. and this site got a pagerank of 5. While my other site (actually it's still a placeholder as for now) got a pagerank of 3, and <strike>my file storage</strike> (temporarily closed for renovation) area got a pagerank of 4, and my blog directory got a pagerank of 4

Although it's quite normal for other sites to have a pagerank of 3 and above, but if it's for me .. of course i'm really happy about it because the previous pagerank for this site is as big as zero :-( and of course because some people always look at that site pagerank value first to judge it’s value (it's a shame though). I hope with the current pagerank there will be more people submitting their blog to my blog directory (as long as it's a blog, i’ll definitely accept it) :-)

Hopefully this value will stay for some time and wont go down (i’ll strive to keep this value or even better increase it) .. lol .. ah .. well .. i guess that’s all about pagerank and such stuff for today :-)

And of course that is really high especially for a website that has been abandoned by me and with only 35 backlink into that website .. now i'm getting more confused about this .. why small site with just 35 backlink got pagerank of 6 ? and my other site got pagerank 3 with just 5 backlink into it ?!

Now how come everyone still looking for huge backlink to their site even with just small number of backlink you can get high pagerank ? ah i don't care about it anyway, because i already left it so there’s no point for me to think about that site .. but i hope this site get high pagerank too in the future :D

Note: The image was taken when i posted this, and i capture it from Seochat, so don't get surprised if the rank changed in the future ..

Copyright www.reaper-x.com | Do it yourself Search Engine Optimization / SEO Tips by Reaper-X

I’ve been wondering why do people want to pay someone to do some sort of Search Engine Optimization / SEO tricks for their site, even they’re ready to pay high / insane price just to get more traffic to their site. Even if they are not writing a good content within their site. Because no matter how many times you’re trying if you don't write something good or giving something (for free) there’s no way you can get more visitors. And that’s why i decided to write a guide on how to get your site listed on search engine by doing everything by yourself just like me on my site here (without someone linking to my site when i built this site and in the other words i built it from the ground without depend on someone else to do the job for me) and that means everything is from the beginning since you own your domain name.

Get a domain name

First of all this is the most important stuff you should get before doing anything else. And why did i ask you to buy a domain name first instead of creating a free website somewhere ? well .. that’s a simple answer. Because if you own a domain name, no matter how many times you change your host / webhosting your name can be reached by your visitors easily. Unless the free webhosting allow you to use 302 / Temporary Redirect or 301 / Permanent Redirect then you'll regret it later.

Get your own webhosting

Of course you’ll need to get a webhosting plan first if you want to start a website, it doesn't matter if you’re going to use your website to make money, having fun, wasting time, test your knowledge on the real web stuff, etc. Because if you don't own a webhosting then there’s no point for you to create a website, beside as everyone else know that free service can't be trusted because they can change their policy anytime, anywhere as they like. Beside you can get cheap hosting easily nowaday. And of course cheap hosting means you’re using a shared hosting, but it doesn't really matter if your website traffic is still low to medium. But if your website get alot of unique visitors daily, just make sure you’ve prepared to go into Dedicated Hosting Plan which is expensive (at least for me).

Write unique / good content

Although i'm not a SEO Expert but one thing i have learn so many things about website and such stuff since i built my first website in July (and bought this domain in August), the only thing that makes your site get indexed by search engine and goes into 100 results / less than 100 or goes to top 10 is your website content and i mean a unique content, because if you don't have unique content there’s no way you can get your site on the top 100 search engine results. And make sure you’re using unique keywords too that describe your website content because if your site is still new, and you're using common keywords there's no way you can compete with a high ranking website. But make sure you're using keywords that's explain your site content very well.

Use proper title for your article

You have wrote unique article or an interesting information, but what good your article do if you don't put the correct title for your article eventhough your site already listed on search engine ? No one will click on your site search result from the search engine, so make sure to use proper title.

Obey search engine rules / guidelines

I think you already saw every pages Terms of Service because most website using them including personal homepage too, but did you actually read them ? i guess most of you didnt really care about it. Because if you did read website Terms of Service, Guidelines, etc. then there'll be less spam on the internet. And that means do not try to use some sort of cloaking technique, creating doorway pages, etc that's specifically designed to get high ranking for search engine not human visitors. Because if there's someone know that you're using dirty tricks to get high search engine position and report it to the respective search engine. You'll lose everything you've done so far, because those search engine will ban and remove your site from their index. And double check to make sure that you're not using hidden text on your site too as well.

Check your site using Lynx Browser

Most of you who are using some free website template, free CMS template, or design your page by yourself should check your website first using <a href="http://lynx.browser.org/"title="Lynx the text browser" >Lynx the text browser and this is important because that’s how a search engine looks at your site. Search engine doesn't care if you’re using a lot of images, flash, etc. because they only care for the text in the webpage itself (although the alt tag can explain it too but normal text is still better) and make sure that your webpage content section get viewed before anyother section on your website. Unfortunately Lynx can be difficult if you’re not used to it, but if you’re a Mozilla Firefox user there’s no need to worry about it because there’s a Mozilla Firefox extension that let you view a webpage like Lynx does. You can read about it in my previous post about the <a href="http://www.reaper-x.com/2006/09/09/list-of-the-most-usefull-firefox-extension.htm"title="recomended Mozilla Firefox extensions list" >recommended Mozilla Firefox extensions list. As a side note, dont you ever try to use frame on your site, because search engine cant index your site properly if you use frame. But if you're already using Lynx, you can view your webpages just like a search engine.

Creating a sitemap

Sitemap is usefull especially if you have a large website with a really deep link in your page, because it makes search engine able to crawl / index your old article much faster rather than normal crawling. So you can be sure your old article get indexed properly by search engine. But the sitemap i'm talking about is not a normal sitemap for your normal visitors (yeah search engine is not normal, they’re robot) but it’s a xml sitemap and standard text format sitemap. And to create the xml sitemap, you can use a free xml sitemap generator service or you can use a free php scripts that’s available on the internet (that’s only apply if you are using a php enabled webhosting) or you can use program to create a sitemap. And if you need to use a free online sitemap generator that’s free you can check the list <a href="http://code.google.com/sm_thirdparty.html"title="List of Online Sitemap Generator" >here. And dont forget to create a sitemap account too as well at Google Sitemap or Yahoo Site Explorer

Submit your site into various directories

If you want to get listed on search engine faster, then you’ll need to get someone else page link to your page. But that doesn't mean you can just make a temporary site just to create link to your site, because your other temporary site will have no value and search engine prefer site that has value or get indexed by the search engine regularly. Although there are various method to do this, the simple and easy way is search for a free web directory (preferable without reciprocal) but that’s depend on your decision. And here’s a list of good blog / web directories where you can submit your site for free, easy and of course they put a direct link back to your site but as a side note some of them are manually checking your website :

Blog Directories

Blog Catalog

BlogHub

Blog Wise

Technorati

Bloggernity

Eatonweb Portal

Blogarama

Blog Directory

Blog Universe

Globe of Blogs

Add URL Blogs

Bloghub

LSBlogs

Bloggeries

Blogflux Directory

Web Directories

DMOZ

Yahoo Directory

Big Web Directory

Digital Point Forums .. actually i want to post some more, but because you can find it easily on the internet and in this example is Digital Point Forums, then there's no point for me to put it here .. note: blog / web directory from digital point are created by the forum users there, and most of the time they're not requiring a link back .. and of course that's a good options to choose

Finally Submit your site to Search Engine

After double / triple check everything, and you already sure that your site can get indexed properly by search engine. It is the time for you to submit to a search engine, although there's no need for you to do this step if your site already listed on several well known site, because search engine will find a link to your site eventhough you didnt submit it manually. But if you're the type that's always want to make sure everything is done correctly, you can submit your site to various search engine manually.

And to make thing easier for you, here’s a list on where you should submit your website :

Google URL Submission Page

<a href="http://www.google.com/addurl/"title="Google URL Submission" >Yahoo URL Submission Page

Alexa URL Submission Page

MSN Search Submission Page

Accoona Submission Page

Baidu Submission Page

Although there's alot of other minor search engine on the internet, but the most important search engine is only MSN, Yahoo, and Google ... and they're the only one that can send traffic to your site

And now what you should do when you’ve submitted your site .. of course .. always try to update your website content regularly, because search engine like website that get updated constantly.

As a final note, im not SEO Expert but everything here is based on my experience when i build this site, and it does works for me .. although my website is still not ranked by Google.

Is it that important ? by Reaper-X

It’s been a while since i started my first blogs ever on 6 July 2006 which located at <a href="http://reaperxzr.wordpress.com/"title="reaperxzr.wordpress.com" target="_blank" rel="me">reaperxzr.wordpress.com, and now i’ve started my second blogs at <a href="http://reaperxzr.daria.be/"title="reaperxzr.daria.be" target="_blank" rel="me">reaperxzr.daria.be. But still i don’t know much about blogrolling / blogroll and such stuff. I only know its concept (which is the same concept like link exchange) but still do not know on how to get someone else to blogroll with me (since most of them only want to exchange link with a Google PR of 3 and above)

I dont really know if blogroll is important or not, but one thing im sure of Link Exchange does increase traffic to your site / blogs / page (although not that much, since they only care about their page rank). And after reading several website about blogroll / link exchange they only care to blogroll with someone that has a minimum Google PR (Page Rank) 3 / 4. At first i though Google PR was something really important but after using Google Toolbar, i think there’s no big difference between a site with Google Page Rank >= 1 and Google Page Rank 0. For example try searching for Reaper-X using Google or try searching for download windows genuine activation tool (this is based by the search query from the visitors that came to my site) or other keywords which is related to my main page / blogs / site. And you’ll see that my page that doesnt have a page rank can still be on the top 10 google search or at least can be found on google.

And the question is … do you really need a pagerank ? I dont think so, since most visitors only care about the content of your site and if you offer unique content they’ll be back to your site no matter what. But the most important thing is you are using the correct keywords for your article / posts since the correct keywords leads you to the top or at least can be found on search engine. And if you’re using Theme created by someone else try opening the page using a Text Based browsers like Lynx since that’s how search engine looks your site, they only search for keywords.

And the conclusion is there’s no need to worry about pagerank and such stuff, think about your content first and use keywords wisely so your site can be found on major search engine and you’ll have returning visitors daily to read your content. And one thing for sure, if you has a lot of blogroll on your site that means you has alot of friends out there, unlike me ;)
