WoW Mangos Map, VMaps and DBC Extraction Guide

Warning : this page contain lots of images

To make installation of WoW Mangos even easier, based on various suggestion / comment made by the commenters on this site, i’ve decided to create a new complete guide using lots of images instead describing each step carefully especially at the extraction process of Maps, Vmaps, and DBC which caused problem on some people because they keep getting various error message related to missing vmap, vmdir, map, etc

As a side note, this process is based on my release (i already include all the tools required) so if you’re using someone else mangos release, you can always adjust the path accordingly (i mean the tools itself of course) or find the tools by yourself :)

Okay and here are the steps …

Requirements :

  • DBC Extractor known as MPQE
  • Ad.exe to extract Maps
  • VMaps Extractor and Assembler to create vmaps

Fresh Installation and Upgrading :

Note : the default WoW Installation Directory is C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft

Note 2 : the default data directory of your WoW Installation can be found at C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Data\enUS

Note 3 : Make sure to delete the buildings, vmaps, and maps directory (if there’s any, left from the previous extraction process) before running the .bat files to extract maps, vmaps, and dbc files

Note 4 : All the Tools needed to extract DBC, VMaps and Maps can be found in Tools directory of my release

1. Extracting Maps :

Copy below files into your WoW installation Directory :

Map extraction

and then run extract-map.bat from your WoW installation directory … and wait … until it finished (it’ll automatically close itself when finished). And here’s what it should look like after you run the extract-map.bat

Extracting map from wow

2. Extracting VMaps :

Copy below files into your WoW installation directory :

Extracting vmaps

then run makevmaps_SIMPLE.bat from your WoW installation directory and wait until finished

Waiting time

When you see something like above image, just wait until PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE MESSAGE appear on your screen. If you close that window before it finished the process, you’ll need to redo the vmaps extraction process from start … estimated time : 40 Minutes – 2 Hours or more depending on your computer speed

And here’s what is should look like when the VMaps extraction process finished :

Vmaps finished

3. Extracting DBC :

Copy below files into your data/enUS directory of your WoW installation

DBC Extractor

And then run the extract.bat from your WoW data directory and wait until it finished, and here’s what it should look like when the dbc extraction is finished

Dbc extraction

4. Moving the VMaps, Maps, and DBC directory

Now since you have finished with the above process, all you have to do is just moving the VMaps and Maps directory like shown on below images into somewhere for example C:\WoW\data

Maps directory

and then now you need to go inside your data/enUS directory and then move the DBC Directory there into C:\WoW\data too. As shown below

Dbc directory

To make things clear, here’s what it should look like when you’ve moved the above three directory into your C:\WoW\data

Moving finished

That’s it … you’re done … as a reminder, you should keep that C:\WoW\data folder to make upgrading mangos process easier and to save time of course (unless there’re some big changes at your WoW installation like new patch) ;)

After looking around a bit more I see I have to revert to 2.1.3 do the extraction stuff and then update to whatever version I want 2.2 or 2.3. Reaper-X thanks so much for putting all the effort into your packs and guides. Hug Hug Kiss kiss (Nacho Libre style)

  3. Val said Nov 21, 2007 at 10:17 am

Hey I’ve just reinstalled WoW and BC then I chose to update to version 2.3
When I run extract-map.bat the displays says error opening archive patch-2.MPQ and error opening archive patch-enUS-2.MPQ but all the others items work fine and it starts it percentage count…
1)How do I get this to work properly if I am missing those 2 files?
2)Can I ignore the fact that it they don’t exist and it just all work out or do I have to figure out a way to get those files?
2.a)If so to the second quation what is that way?
If you have addressed this issue before I apologize I did check around before asking…

Hi currently trying to extract the DBC bit but I’m getting the same problems as other people as I’m running vista 64bit. I downloaded the 2.2.3 dbc extracted files but firstly I’ve downloaded patch 2.3, and where would I extract the dbc files to?

yes but now i’m using windows xp x64 and i’m just about to install wow and try it again

  8. Crikey said Nov 19, 2007 at 12:03 am

Per your previous response to #Bart does this mean as of right now if I am running 2.3.0 I can not setup Mangos? or if I remember correctly you mentioned in previous replys that because this file is not there we just ignore the error?

Thank you in advance for your help and Thank you for all the work you do.

  11. Reaper-X said Nov 17, 2007 at 9:04 am

    # Bart

Usually that enUS-2 or enGB-2 gets deleted when there was major update (such as from wow 2.1.3 to 2.2.0 back then) or 2.2.3 to 2.3.0 like this time, and reappeared again on the next minor update (for example 2.2.0 to 2.2.2) or perhaps 2.3.0. to 2.3.x

so that mean there’s a high chance that you currently running wow 2.3.0 or 2.2.0 :)

    # asdf

http://microsoft.com/downloads and search for .NET runtime .. and you’ll get various .net download link ;)

    # Shadelow

Are you able to locate that file using your windows search function ?

    # The Dude

No worries beside that’s what this comment form used for ;) btw Did you delete the buildings directory first before re-extracting it and also delete the vmaps folder created before ? as for mangosd can’t locate the vmaps, try adjusting the datadir so it’ll point to a single directory where VMaps, DBC and Maps can be found :)

    # makko

To be honest, i never get that access denied message … btw did you run the process using your administrator account ? or account that has admin privilege ?

  24. Shadelow said Nov 14, 2007 at 3:45 pm

ok i fix one problem and another pops up, now when I go to run mangos, I get the map 0004331.map not found error, Ive tryed extracting the maps and DBC again and it hasnt fixed the issue. You mentioned uve released an update today or yesterday i believe can u post the url to that update?

    Thanks again

  25. asdf said Nov 14, 2007 at 10:31 am

can’t find .NET Runtime 2, can you post a link to it, please? :P

  26. The Dude said Nov 14, 2007 at 7:03 am

On my last comment, to be more specific…

i have latest update of wow, i have everything i could possible need, been through all the steps, etc… the only real problem is that the vmap is not being recognized or perhaps the mangosd is looking at the previous ones i’ve extracted (which did not have maps in them first time)

if you have any clue whatsoever, i know you can’t run it yourself, but if theres anything like in the codes or something… could u set me in the right direction??

I’m seriously seriously seriously sorry, i’m probably soundin noobish right bout now =(

  27. makko said Nov 14, 2007 at 3:13 am

when i run extract-map.bat it tells me in the start…
    “Access is denied.
    Opening ./Data/patch-2.MPQ
    Error opening archive ./Data/patch-2.MPQ
    Opening ./Data/patch.MPQ
    Opening ./Data/common.MPQ

    Opening ./Data/enUS/patch-enUS-2.MPQ

    Opening ./Data/enUS/patch-enUS.MPQ
    Opening ./Data/enUS/locale-enUS.MPQ

    is that normal?

  28. The Dude said Nov 13, 2007 at 10:32 pm

    Thanks for answering =)
and i did put that in the datadir

just to check though, my vmap_assembler opens and closes so i can’t do anything with that
and the vmapextract closes when its done, no Press any Key to Continue…is that normal?

sorry to comment so much =P

  29. Reaper-X said Nov 13, 2007 at 8:07 pm

    # The Dude

Let’s say that you put the data where vmaps, dbc, and maps directory in C:\wow\data

    and the question is ;)

Did you write C:\wow\data as your datadir ?

based on my experience it seems that most people seems forgot to write the forward slash “C:\” and write C:wow\data instead and of course if you didn’t use forward slash right after “C:” it’ll be error ;)

  30. The Dude said Nov 13, 2007 at 1:20 pm

i’m having a similar problem with one of these guys… mangosd is telling me that i do not have vmaps/001_33_39.vdir which is obviously there…

  31. Reaper-X said Nov 12, 2007 at 12:54 pm

“the applaction failed to initalize porperly (0xc0000135)”

=( sigh i thought it was working perfectly. what can i do?”

  48. Reaper-X said Nov 8, 2007 at 4:24 pm

    # Dominator69

I can upload the extracted dbc files without problem (actually i have uploaded it 3 times), but unfortunately i can’t upload the vmaps and maps folder because it’s to huge for me and my slow internet connection

i’m sure uploading the vmaps (compressed 500MB) and maps (haven’t tried compressing this one yet) will take more than 36 hours non stop for me to upload it (could be more)

and i think you already know that there’s a high chance the uploaded file get corrupted … so … that’s why i choose to not upload it (beside if im uploading that huge files i won’t be able to browse the net until the process completely finished)

so if there’s someone else who’s using high speed connection and want to share it … it’d be really helpful for everyone :)

(i’ll put the link to it on the next release and will give full credits to those who uploaded it)
