WoW Mangos Map, VMaps and DBC Extraction Guide

Warning : this page contain lots of images

To make installation of WoW Mangos even easier, based on various suggestion / comment made by the commenters on this site, i’ve decided to create a new complete guide using lots of images instead describing each step carefully especially at the extraction process of Maps, Vmaps, and DBC which caused problem on some people because they keep getting various error message related to missing vmap, vmdir, map, etc

As a side note, this process is based on my release (i already include all the tools required) so if you’re using someone else mangos release, you can always adjust the path accordingly (i mean the tools itself of course) or find the tools by yourself :)

Okay and here are the steps …

Requirements :

  • DBC Extractor known as MPQE
  • Ad.exe to extract Maps
  • VMaps Extractor and Assembler to create vmaps

Fresh Installation and Upgrading :

Note : the default WoW Installation Directory is C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft

Note 2 : the default data directory of your WoW Installation can be found at C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Data\enUS

Note 3 : Make sure to delete the buildings, vmaps, and maps directory (if there’s any, left from the previous extraction process) before running the .bat files to extract maps, vmaps, and dbc files

Note 4 : All the Tools needed to extract DBC, VMaps and Maps can be found in Tools directory of my release

1. Extracting Maps :

Copy below files into your WoW installation Directory :

Map extraction

and then run extract-map.bat from your WoW installation directory … and wait … until it finished (it’ll automatically close itself when finished). And here’s what it should look like after you run the extract-map.bat

Extracting map from wow

2. Extracting VMaps :

Copy below files into your WoW installation directory :

Extracting vmaps

then run makevmaps_SIMPLE.bat from your WoW installation directory and wait until finished

Waiting time

When you see something like above image, just wait until PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE MESSAGE appear on your screen. If you close that window before it finished the process, you’ll need to redo the vmaps extraction process from start … estimated time : 40 Minutes – 2 Hours or more depending on your computer speed

And here’s what is should look like when the VMaps extraction process finished :

Vmaps finished

3. Extracting DBC :

Copy below files into your data/enUS directory of your WoW installation

DBC Extractor

And then run the extract.bat from your WoW data directory and wait until it finished, and here’s what it should look like when the dbc extraction is finished

Dbc extraction

4. Moving the VMaps, Maps, and DBC directory

Now since you have finished with the above process, all you have to do is just moving the VMaps and Maps directory like shown on below images into somewhere for example C:\WoW\data

Maps directory

and then now you need to go inside your data/enUS directory and then move the DBC Directory there into C:\WoW\data too. As shown below

Dbc directory

To make things clear, here’s what it should look like when you’ve moved the above three directory into your C:\WoW\data

Moving finished

That’s it … you’re done … as a reminder, you should keep that C:\WoW\data folder to make upgrading mangos process easier and to save time of course (unless there’re some big changes at your WoW installation like new patch) ;)

  15. Reaper-X said Nov 4, 2007 at 4:05 pm

    # LambdaComplex

Unfortunately lots of people who ran 64 version also get the same problem like you too

the only thing i can suggest is by downloading the extracted dbc files from somewhere

p.s if you’re using WoW 2.2.3 enUS, you can download extracted dbc files from below link :

    http://www.mediafire.com/?32uzmqzjghi

(just uploaded it when posting this)

  16. Reaper-X said Nov 4, 2007 at 3:43 pm

have you checked to make sure that the datadir point to the correct location where vmaps, maps, and dbc (all three of them) can be found in one directory ?

for example lots of people seems to be using (based on the numbers of emails i received) :

    C:\wow\date

while the actual location can be found at :

    c:\wow\data

    (typo) :P

  17. makko said Nov 4, 2007 at 2:58 pm

i have the map files and vmaps there but my mangosd says that i don’t have them there :S….. any help please??

  18. Jake said Nov 4, 2007 at 2:19 pm

Everyhting is good except mangosd is saying there aren’t any .map files in the directory i gave when there all right there. Also it’s saying that it can’t find any .vmap or .vmdir files, but they are all .wmo and .mdx files. Whats wrong?

  19. LambdaComplex said Nov 4, 2007 at 12:01 pm

I’ve also tried to run in under the normal Windows XP compatibility mode and Windows 2000 compatibility mode

  20. LambdaComplex said Nov 4, 2007 at 11:57 am

When using the extract.bat for the DBC extrator it get an error saying it can’t locate the SFmpq.dll file. the error looks like this:

    MPQ-Extractor v1.4 by WRS
    Fatal: Could not locate SFmpq.dll
    MPQ-Extractor v1.4 by WRS
    Fatal: Could not locate SFmpq.dll
    MPQ-Extractor v1.4 by WRS
    Fatal: Could not locate SFmpq.dll
The system cannot find the file specified.
Press any key to continue . . .

All of the files you specified in the walkthrough I put in the data/enUS folder along with the SFmpq.dll file. Its definatly in there along with the three other files.

My world of warcraft directory is c:\world of warcraft\ instead of the program files\world of warcraft. I’m also running 64 bit Windows XP if that could have an affect on it. Any advice or solutions would be awesome.

  23. makko said Nov 4, 2007 at 6:21 am

now the problem is wrong EnGB ad.exe

  24. makko said Nov 4, 2007 at 4:25 am

Lol … btw thanks a lot for your help :D

    # sess

Are you using Windows XP ? usually that error message comes up if you’re using 64 bit version :(

i’d suggest you to try using WinMPQ and see if it’s work for you or not :)

    # Jeff

Access denied ? are you using account that has administrative privilege or just normal account ?

  27. Jeff said Nov 3, 2007 at 11:03 am

when i run exract-map it say access is denied at the top and then the processing goes up then it does nothing can i fix that

  28. sess said Nov 3, 2007 at 5:09 am

when i run extract.bat its says ”could not locate SFmpq.dll” but its in the same directory and both in wow folder and mangos folder it dosent work
    what should i do?

  29. Muskar said Nov 3, 2007 at 1:25 am

    I am bored waiting for Reaper-X to get online again, so here goes some help to the unanswered questions;

    #zoop
You right click on ‘extract.bat’ and click ‘Edit’.
and then you replace ‘enUS’ with ‘enGB’ all three places.
This is what it should look like when you are done:
    @echo off
    mpqe /d “.” locale-enGB.MPQ *.dbc
    mpqe /d “.” patch-enGB.MPQ *.dbc
    mpqe /d “.” patch-enGB-2.MPQ *.dbc
    ren DBFilesClient dbc

    pause

    #Philip
If you didn’t put ‘Hide extension names on known file types’ off in the Folder Options (in any folder, using Windows Explorer) under the ‘Show’ tab, then you can’t see the file extension (.bat).

So the extract-file is in fact the correct one.
If you need to edit it, just do as I just told zoop to do.

    #kloaRichter
Look on my reply to zoop above.
(The extract.bat file is located in C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\data\enGB\ if you followed the guide, and if you installed WoW at the default directory).

    #WoWeek
No bat files? Check my reply to Philip

    #Boomstick
Please, specify your question a bit more, what doesn’t work? What are the excact errors you get?

The issue about locating-maps-errors is often in association with the enBG issue.
Do you play on enUS servers? If not, do as I told the other people above in this reply.

#Stepback, if you have this window still:

    http://www.reaper-x.com/images/blogs/waiting-20time.jpg
Then I would like to ask you..:
How long did it take you to get to the screen?
It took me 30 minutes to get to it, and it took me 10 minutes to get away from this page.

So if you waited 5 hours to get to it, it should be about 1½-2 hours to get away from this.

(As a sidenote, a new computer with Windows XP doesn’t say a lot about the performance, just that it is not outdated.
Performance (in case of loading) is mostly about your memory (RAM) and your processor (CPU).)

I hope I was of help =) Enjoy people! Good luck and have fun!

  32. StepBack said Nov 1, 2007 at 6:48 am

HI, I ran the makevmaps_SIMPLE and I got to the part where you have to wait to get a “press any key to continue” but, I have been waiting for 5 hours even though I have a windowsxp brand new… and it still hasnt shown up. Any tips?

  33. ChrisM said Oct 31, 2007 at 7:31 am

Oh! I got the extract-map.bat to work. After a few hours of almost throwing my computer at the wall, I placed the extract-map.bat and the ad.exe files in the (default) C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft file; it picked up the data as enUS (like it should have), and filled up my maps folder. Yay, me. And thank you, Reaper-X!

  34. ChrisM said Oct 31, 2007 at 5:02 am

To note, I’ve already changed (in the DBC Directory) the enUS to enGB and back several times. Nothing of that sort seems to fix the problem.

  35. ChrisM said Oct 31, 2007 at 4:34 am

I am having trouble with the extract-map.bat process. The extractor says it cannot open the enGB files, but I am NOT using enGB. All of my files are enUS. I have no idea what to do.

  46. Philip said Oct 28, 2007 at 9:01 am

Hello, Where my extract.bat file should be there is only an extract file (no .bat in the name). Also when I try to install this it says I need a new “frame works”. Also when installing Mysql I type “mysql ~u root ~p” But all that comes up is a list of how to use it and the product’s information. Thanks : )

if you use enGB, open the bat file and replace enUS with enGB ;)
