Connecting PS2 to PC Monitor using TV Tuner

Yay … i'm back again after taking a break for about a week or so if i recall correctly :) .. and this time im going to post about connecting ps2 console to monitor using TV Card / TV Tuner Cards. And if you ask me, why i did not use other method to connect my ps2 console to my monitor using other peripheral such as VGA BOX or something like that ? .. the answer is simple, because the only thing i have is just a low quality tv tuner from PixelView (Prolink) named Prolink PlayTV HD (it is an old tv cards and not many PVR program are support this tv tuner so if you decided to buy it, you might reconsider on choosing other card) but i also use my video card vivo capability
As a side note, i decided to connect my ps2 console into my pc monitor because my pc monitor is larger than my tv size :( .. other than that, my old tv can only support Mono Audio not stereo audio which is a big disadvantage for all music games such as Guitar Hero, Drum Mania, Guitar Freaks, etc. But the downside of this method is, you’ll need to turn on your computer whenever you want to play your ps2 (but it can be easily switched just in case you do not feel like turning on your computer)
Okay .. that’s all for the introduction, and now here’s what you’ll need in order to connect your ps2 output to your monitor :
Hardware :
1. TV Tuner Card (well .. of course this is the most important peripheral before anything else) :P .. and here’s what it looks like if you connect the ps2 video output to your tv tuner input (the yellow cable) :
2. or VGA Card with ViVo (composite video in / video out) capability but in this case the only thing you’re going to use is only the Video In .. here’s what my VGA card vivo input looks like :
3. Soundcard … <= to record audio of course but im 100% sure your computer already has a soundcard even if it’s an onboard soundcard
4. Y-Connector (image below) or similar connector to connect your ps2 audio output to your soundcard (recommended) or tv card
Software :
- Im using DScaler 4 and you can get it from here (Open Source / Freeware) .. <= small file size, and recommended
- but you can also use other software such as Media Portal (Open Source / Freeware) if your card supported or choose a commercial software
- Optional : Divx 6.1 ++ (i'm using Divx 6.4 Codec) that has High Speed Recording mode so you can record your ps2 into a video file
And here’s the step :
- Connect your ps2 video output cable (in this example it is using the composite output) or you can also say the Yellow Cable to the Video input of your tv card or your VGA Card
- Connect your ps2 audio output cable to Y-Connector and connect the Y-Connector into the Line-in of your soundcard
- Run DScaler and configured it to use your capture card and set the video source to composite
- And to make thing even easier, configure DScaler to automatically detect your PS2 Video Output (NTSC M/NTSC M JP/PAL BGHI) by checking the Automatic Format Detect on the Deinterlace menu .. in my case because i'm using modchip in my ps2, so the DScaler will automatically adjust between each Region Video Format Type everytime i insert different games (my ps2 console is PAL type)
- Configure the rest of DScaler to your liking (to get the best thing possible from your card)
- and the results :

That’s it .. now you can freely record your ps2 games easily =) or make a screen capture from your PS2 games ..

I just tried this method for hooking up my ps2 to my computer/monitor and everything is working fine. I tried to load some pal games but they all load in B&W and the screen is rolling, however, i selected the Automatic Format Detect option on the Deinterlace menu. I have a modchip too (DMS4 pro) and ntsc ps2 and the video mode is turned off (so i can clearly see that the video mode is not changed in the chip but will be changed in the computer monitor..do u know if this option really work? if i choose manually the video mode in dscaler, i get some error on the screen in green about video mode not found or something similar :(

Actually if you use modchip and enable the Automatic Film Detection under Filters tab it should automatically switch into PAL mode (in the above picture sample, my video mode switch into NTSC/J in GFV2DMV2 game)
btw try changing the video format manually (disable the automatic detection first) without actually turn on your ps2 first and see if you can change it without problem or not
hm..still not working, well, its working but my pictures is still not in the right color and the screen is rolling..btw, im using a LCD monitor and its connected with a DVI cable to my video card..also my ps2 is connected to my Hauppage 150 tv tuner card with the s-video cable (i have a s-video cable in and the R/L audio inputs on my tv tuner card so my ps2 is connected directly to my card without any other cables or Y connector. Pal games with 50/60hz selector work fine on the monitor/TV but im trying to play games without the selector and as u know, i cannot play them normally on my tv because its only ntsc..and usually a monitor supports both signal.. and i remember, on my old CRT monitor, the pal games showed up in full colour and full speed. I tried your above method, but sill no luck :(
Ok..finally i fixed it....but i had to connect my ps2 to my ati radeon X700 Pro 256mb video card, it has a s-video in/out connector and i used a s-video in/out cable to connect my ps2 to my video card's s-video. I left the video standard to ntsc-m in DScaler and i choosed the option color carrier on my ps2's modchip. This way the video card/monitor fix the rolling screen on pal games and the color carrier option on my chip will output the right color on my monitor dependig on the game ill play (if i turn off the color carrier on my chip, pal games will comes out in grey/b&w) turned on, its all in colour and no screen rolling, like if it was the ntsc version. but i dont have the sound yet because the audio cables of the ps2 is still connected to my tvtuner card..so i need to get a small Y connector so i can get the sound from my pc's soundcard. just one question, now that my ps2 is hooked up to my video card, do u know a good setting in dscaler to get the best picture on my monitor?? like all the settings in filters, deinterlace, aspect ratio ,best resolution. etc because the quality its a little worse than on my tv tuner card :)

Unfortunately i cant give suggestions on which filters should be used because the results may differ from each card and i never tried ATI card before (as a sidenote, im still using the old GForce 4 TI 4600 card) lol
btw maybe you could upload a screenshot somewhere so i can see it (im really interested on seeing how it looks actually) ?
sure, ill upload some screenshots from the game Flatout 2 PAL, it has a 50/60 selector right at the begining but u will see that even If I choose 50hz the game is in full color and no screen rolling..only the bottom of the game/screen is cut off a little on my monitor, i dunno if it can be fixed, i.e moving up the image a little bit

Hi guys.
I'm french and i've been searching for an answer to this problem for weeks and i still didn't manage to fix it. I think i've done the connections right (S-Video input and Stereo input right on my TV tuner card) but when I launch Dscaler, this error message appears : "Error: Failed to connect video capture device to renderer".
And in the left hand down corner I read : "No Video Signal input" whereas i think my connections are good. And i've never seen one picture from my PS2 on my PC.
TV card : Hauppauge WinTV PVR
Graphic card : FX5200
CPU : 3.00 Ghz (P4)
Could you please give me advices ?

as for your card, the only suggestion i can give is look at the dscaler supported card page and hauppage faq page (i've seen many people experiencing problem with this card) because i havent tried hauppage card yet :(

I've always wanted to know if it is possible to connect a PS2 to a PC, and viewing this website, I've decided to have a go.
I think I've wired up the console correctly to my VGA card and to the y-connector that you point out above, but I've looked at the software and I'm clueless on how to use it.
A short guide on how to get the PS2 image playing on the monitor using this DScaler software would be much appreciated. Thanks!

First of all i'd like to thank you for visiting this site Michael :)
Actually using dscaler is quite easy :) ... you just have to configured the source to use the composite input (or corresponding input you're using) and you're all set
but if you want to get the best thing possible from your card, i'd suggest you to play around on dscaler configuration (every tv card give you different results)
first of all thanks for all the info, they are really helpful.However, i have a problem about the quality.when the size of the window is small, game's quality is good, but when i make it greater it gets blurry and ugly, fullscreen is even worse.So is there something you can suggest me to do???(my tv card is a fly 98)and whene it comes to Vivo thing, can i get a better quality if i use Vivo???

as for quality, that depend on your tv card of course, because different tv card produce different results so i cant say much about it (beside the only tv card i've tested so far is only my current tv card because .. well .. i dont have that much money to get another tv card) lol

tuner PixelView PlayTVpro and it worked fine though I did'nt like the result much even if I added some filters and deinterlacing method using DScaler4. I tried connecting my PS2 to my ATI Radeon 9600 PRO using SVideo cable and DScaler could not find any video signal so, no displays. Is there any way to make this work?
Anino, the port on the back of your 9600 is an S-Video Out. What you need is a Tv-in, which is why we are using Tv Tuners.

The article on the PS2 connection to the PC is really good. I tried connecting mine. The Video loads just fine but there is no audio. Any help?
No audio ? try looking if White and Red cable already connected to your soundcard input using the Y-Connector, and make sure the recording is set to Line In on Windows Volume Control
if your audio cable are connected to your pc soundcard you can try check at the sound control panel there for line in make sure it's not muted (assume that you plug your cable to the blue color jack)

snazzi easy vcd creator card .. the quality is acceptable :) going to buy a s-video output cable for my PS2, hope there more improvement on it ! :) cheers !

as for the S-Video, im sure that it'll give you a better quality, although i havent tested it yet :)
In the initial try( when in XP) i connected the PS2 directly to the Tuner card, and everything loaded up perfectly fine and audio was perfect. But in Vista, the audio does not load. I have reverted back to XP and am gonna try one more try. My tuner card has the yellow, red, white ports with S video connector. I also have a Geforce 8600 GTS with Audigy 4 5.1 surround system on a 19 inch LCD monitor. The Y connector you have mentioned is not available. So what is the next best option. When i initially ran it, the audio was routed to my headphones. But now i have a 5.1 system. Is the Y connector the ONLY option? Please help. Thanks for everything..
My tuner card has the yellow, red, white ports with S video connector.

Based on your description (i dont know what tv tuner card you're using so im just guessing this), i think you can use this method :
1. Connect all the AV Cable (White,red,yellow) to your tv tuner card
2. If your tv tuner card has a 3.5mm line out connector now you need to buy a 3.5mm cable from :

3. and then connect it to your soundcard line in
wow! that was fast! Thanks a lot Reaper X, u definitely rule!! I'll try out the things u told me to do. BTW, earlier i only connected the 3 pins of the A/V cable of the PS2 to the tuner, and it used to run fine( both audio and video). Dunno what happened now!!
With regards to the video, it looks washed out on the wide screen monitor( unlike in the earlier CRT where it was fine!!). In this case do i have to use component or S video cable to increase picture clarity or should i mess with the settings of Dscaler to get optimum picture quality. Coz on my HDTV( LCD based), it looks really good( but it is constantly used by the family members and hence can never get it free!). So i was wondering if there is anything wrong with the my LCD monitor or my setting of Dscaler.
well since im still using the old crt i can't say much about it (i guess i should upgrade my monitor into LCD too if i had the money *not HDTV* lol)
But one thing for sure is S-Video output is a lot better than the composite output ;)

I wished to know if I can play PS2 on my PC monitor if I get an internal capture card and install it on my PC while having a quite slow computer and does not have a good 3D card... (perhaps doesn't even have one, lol)

Pentium 4 1.5ghz, 128mb RAM, running on windows XP Professional SP2.
does not have any good 3D card.
I'm wondering if the whole stuff work out without having my PS2 connected to the 3D card?

Actually as long as you have tv tuner card you can use it to connect your ps2 output to your tv tuner input :)

Do you have any drivers for Philips FM 1216ME H-3 Tuner card. Coz earlier when i had the original setup, I got sound from the games i played using Dscaler earlier without the method you suggested. But now no matter what i try( My TV tuner does not have the 3.5 mm jack), i cant get the sound to come. How come it worked fine earlier and now no sound is coming? I only connected the white yellow and red and earlier it was absolutely fine. Only now the problem has risen
Hey I'm wondering if anyone can help me with a question. I been trying to connect my ps2 to my monitor. My monitor is a 24" with 1920 x 1200 resolution. I wanna know whats the best way to connect it and get the best results?
I wish there was a better way to capture. Like capture in the exact size of the output video instead of having those black bars around the picture. I've also tried playing my PS2 on my computer but there's always a slight delay between the video capture card and my moniter. The sound is okay though since that's pretty direct. Just the video lags behind a bit. It'd be nice if they had something like RemoteJoy for PSP on the PS2.

i have a global terminator tv tuner card with av cables and a s-video coonector. i have connected my ps2 av cables to the tv tuner card ports and it worked fine, although the picture quality is not that good. will the picture quality improve if i connect the yellow av cable to the s-video connector? thanks. :)
Hey, I have a pinnacle tv tuner (external) with a mini usb input, in the package there was also an "adapter" from mini usb to S-video, composite and sound. My only problem is that I can't find a Y-connector anywhere... anyone know of an online store or something that has it and can deliver it to Norway?
ey, i might sound like a total noob, but i read your instructions, and am getting a picture but no sound. i plugged my y-connector in my blue socket of the sound card, and on the dscaler sound menu, i cant change anything, and on the status-bar it says volume mute, plz help. no sound and picture is pretty bad, i have a winfast dtv1000 t tuner card and nvidia gfx 5200, pretty shit.
i am getting sound, but it is minimal at best through my speakers and headphones, and to make sure my line-in is full not muted and full blast.
damn with some fiddling around i fixed it, only question now is, how do i get the perfect picture or close to that and how much better is s-video than composite, btw i already have gamma on.

Ok, please do explain to me how exactly one connects ones ps2 to ones LCD monitor and being able to capture/record the game. Are there any loose parts/connectors/adaptors and cables that I need to purchase? What TV tuner card would you suggest is the best to achieve the best visual experience? Oh and by the way please explain the sound thing also...how to achieve the best sound quality and how to connect my speakers, mwah thanx

Hey Reaper, what tv tuner did you use? I know some actually lag the input of the ps2 by a few seconds, which is definately not acceptable for gaming. I've done the research and there are just so many to choose from.

is it okay to connect the ps2 without any graphic card? my graphic card burned out few months ago, my mobo was totally screwed, so i had to change to a crappy mobo, since my pc is an old system. and i dont have any money yet to buy a new graphic card.
