Need for Speed Carbon Crash to Desktop Issue

I thought by upgrading my windows xp version into service pack 2 (already updated) from service pack 1, using latest Nvidia Driver, etc, it’ll resolve the crash to desktop issue which randomly appear .. but it seems i was wrong .. because i still experiencing random crash to desktop issue when playing this game (when buying parts, selecting car, etc)

Although i’ve already finished playing this game (100% Completion) .. but this issue still bothering me especially because i’ve never experienced problem like this in the previous Need for Speed series .. ah .. well .. i think i have to give up on solving this issue because it doesn't affect my savegame at all (savegame not corrupted)

At least i know that it was EA fault because my computer is in their recommended hardware requirement to play this game .. and as a note, i didn't apply 1.3 patch .. because i don't think it’ll solve the crash to desktop problem (try reading the NFS Carbon 1.3 Patch changelog)

Got the same problem, and when trying to start the game again, either it crashes again, or reset my computer.. This really bother me, cause I feel like i'll never complete this game as its crashing after 2-3 races, I sometimes have to redo some races because of the crash, and worst of all, reboot my computer after one crash.

So.. yeah, if anyone got a solution for this "issue", I would love to hear from you by email/MSN :raizor91@gmail.com

    Peace.

Well mine is the same, see, whenever i look at two, three cars and finish four races than it crashes to the desktop. and also after a race, the loading seems a little slow and jerky and also in movie scenes like cross getting out of his car saying 'sit down' and all that and the part when you get busted its SLOW! Please email me as soon as possible!
    thanks!

If its for me im only experiencing random crash. Sometime i was able to play non stop for about 2 - 3 hours without crashing to desktop .. and sometime when i choose a car, it just go back to desktop immediately

the only solution i can think of is ... wait for another update from EA (maybe 1.4 update) because the 1.3 patch does nothing other than fixing online problem with NFS carbon, so there's no need to use that patch

There seems to be a problem with dual-core machines and nfs:c. Minimize game to desktop press ctrl+alt+del and go to the nfsc.exe process and set the affinity to only cpu 0. it's a temporary fix that worked for me.

If its not a dual-core problem, check that you have the latest graphics drivers installed and that your pc is not overheating as the game does draw a lot of resources from both your cpu and gpu.

yeah, i have a dual core AMD 4400 processor that runs at 2.21GHz and the game requires 1.71GHz... when i run easyinfo, it says my processor is running at -8325.8MHz... something is wrong... i don't think a processor can run -MHz... everything else works with flying colors...

I have a 3.2 Dual-core cpu and Microsoft provided a hotfix for users who have performance issues. The article states that it is not intended for AMD cpu's so use of the fix is entirely your own decision.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896256

Other than that the only advice given from them is to update your cpu drivers.
    Good Luck.

I've found a fix thats more reliable than my previous theory. I have 2 pc's with the same o/s and software - almost identical. My older pc didn't crash. The newer dual-core sli one did. Both pcs had the 6600gt running EXCEPT that the older one was running on 84.21 forceware. I replaced the newest drivers (still wondering why nvidia hasn't released an update apart from the beta one) with the 84.21 and was pleasantly surprised with NO crash issues thusfar.

Note that it's not a definite fix but I haven't crashed at the usual spots with the 84.21 running yet. It's worth trying out as nothing else seems to have helped.

No. I give up. Game crashed again - every thing I've tried thusfar seems to work for a day or two then it's back to the beginning. It's almost as if NFS:C has some sort of AI that adapts to the fixes then nails you when you least expect it. I think by the time there's a fix a newer NFS might be out.

Luckily, there are other racing games out there that offer the same amount of fun. Colin Mcrae and the GT series are of the same quality. Why, o WHY doesn't this happen on consoles?

dunno but if i recall correctly there's someone using the xbox360 version got the same crash problem lol

i guess the crash problem is just the new features built in by ea team :P

must be. It is quite strange though cause I can't recall that any of EA's other games crashed like this. But, the thing that I find disturbing is the amount of time that passed between the releases of the last two NFS's. I remember thinking when NFS:C was released, "Wow, that soon already!?". Just a thought...

OK, I am really getting pissed off... i have tried EVERYTHING! i have tried setting the affinity to cpu 0, then cpu 1 and that worked twice... then i tried some other crap, still didn't work... i am only angry at the fact that i paid $40 for this game, and EA has yet to even send the people that purchased the game a email saying that they understand there is a problem and that they are working on it... PISSS! ohh and my splinter cell double agent is like in permanent slow motion...

    Same problem here..
NFS Carbon Crashes all the time to desktop (aproximitely after 2 hours of play..)
All other games run Fine and Smooth with No crash..

For SP1 I had crash to desktop, and for SP2 i had "Not Responding" Window..

    My system is..:
    AMD X2 3800+
    Asus M2N32-SLi Deluxe
    1GB Corsair DDR2 800Mhz
    250 GB WD SATA2
    MSI 7900GTX
    X-FI Extreme Gamer
    450Watt Asus Power Supply

Soo.. I Fully Know that this is not My PCs problem, because As I told already, at about 20-30 new games Has no Crash at All..

But for you to make sure..
Run Memtest86+ Ram Test for 5-6 Hours (leave for the night) (http://www.memtest.org/#downiso)

Run "ORTHOS" Test for 8-12 Hours
    For Single Core - http://sp2004.fre3.com/sp2004exe_20060405.cab
    For Dual Core - http://sp2004.fre3.com/beta/beta2.htm

Aand 3D mark for 12 Hours too..
    http://www.futuremark.com/

All this software is Free (except for some advanced 3D MArk features you will need to pay). And I think they are really usefull.. (NO WAREZ)

Ok now.. If you got 3D Mark crash all the timem or certain test fail to finish.. It means that you have some problems with VGA, sometimes overheating.. sometimes faulty Card)

If you got MemTest86+ Crash, it more likely that you have setted up incorrect timings to ram, or the Ram is faulty.. If you have multiple Sticks try testing with only one stick

ORTHOS Crash Usually means that you have setted up incorrect timings too, and or YOur CPU experiencing Overheating.. or in worth case it is faulty

This is the 1st test that professional would do at home to test Hes Personal Computer..
    Hope for you all Ok.

p.s. Sorry for my Bad English, I am From Lithuania, And I speak rarely in it..
Btw. Today PC gaming is kinda complexed, many systems, many developers.. It is hard to make bug Free game for all systems..

I was just googling for fixes as I'm having the same problems, read this page and thought I'd post too.
    My system:
    Win XP SP2
    Intel P4 3Ghz
    1Gb DDR 400
    Asus P4P800 mobo
    2 X 320Gb SATA HDD's
ATI 9600 pro (8 X AGP) with latest Catalyst drivers

Issue seems intermittent, after anywhere between half an hour and 2 hours of play, game hangs, crashes to desktop and a windows error pops up. I've clicked on debug for the last 10 or so times, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference.
I've even tried shutting down as many background processes, without success.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as it's pi$$ing me off too!

I just bought this NFS Carbon from Future Shop today. I installed it as normal procedure dictates. Then just when the game was loading, it hangs on the last screen before the main menu just after I entered my name initials. It froze there. I rebooted my system. Froze again. Rebooted, froze again. I uninstalled it and reintalled it. Froze again. I figured. MY PC is not the problem. I have 320 GB + 160 GB hard drive, 2 GB RAM. 3.2 clock speed. Pentium D with 256 MB ati 9600 video card. This is the only game that freezes.

My verdict. RETURNING IT BACK TO FUTURE SHOP! NOW!

Same things. NFS:C crashes to desktop. Crashed on my old pc an crashes on the current one too.

    Old pc:

    AMD 3200+ Venice
    Asus A8NE Deluxe
    2x512MB DDR 400
    GeForce 6600 GT

    Current pc:

    E4400 Core 2 Duo
    Asus P5B
    2x1GB DDR2 800
    GeForce 7600 GST

Did countless hours of memory and CPU tests but system is working fine, no other game crashes. Most up-to-date drivers as possible. I have XP. Tried older graphics drivers and also tried no-sp, sp1 and sp2. Tried 1.3 and 1.4. Still it crashes when choosing cars or doing a couple of events.

Seems to be a ****ing bug that pisses me off every time I win a tough event. Sp **** this ****...i'm going back to ARMA!:):D:P

alright....i do suffer from the same problem BUT only when i enable the option 'high' for car details. usually i run it at 800x600 with all other settings at either low or off. I rarely get those annoying crashes though it has not happen yet (i don't play for too long 1-2 hours).

Anyone experiencing those crashes do try to do the same...though the game may still crash but less frequently :)

i have an Nvidia 6500,P1.6 Ghz (dual core),1 GB ram running under win xp sp2

I know whats the problem, overheating, it is something about the game that makes the cooling system go slower than it should so the pc go warm and close the game to cool down. This should be easy to fix, if it was any way to make the cooling system work harder while playing the game.

Well, I have the same problem, after a few runs and races it crashes to desktop, I don't think I have any overheating issues as my temperatures for both my GFX cards are ~60C and CPU Temperature rizes up to about 50C. My ram is brand new. No other game crashes except this one.

I did have another issue with this game, while I was testing my pc hardware, I had one GFX card (I have 2x eVGA 6800 Ultras) in the slot, my game did pop a BSoD saying that nv4_disp.dll is conflicting with something. It was a 0x8E error. After thinking that it was my hardware, I took everything off, cleaned and reseated everything back. I still had the same errors. (I have worked as a computer technician before and used measures in order not to be statically charged, so the issue that i might have defected a hardware is out of the question).

So i tried running the game through linux (Cedega), it told me that it was unable to read/write on a memory module. So I decided to try with SLi, run perfectly full graphics, but crashes to desktop.

Maybe EA has intended to publish this game for VISTA Components (Software/Hardware) and payed less attention to other O/S's Component requirements.

Just for posting sakes here are my specs.

    Motherboard: MSI K8N Platinum SLi
    CPU: Athlon AMD64 FX-55@2.6GHz
    RAM: 2GB Ram (Ultra)
    GFX: 2x eVGA 6800 Ultra
    2x200GB Maxtor SATA

And tried playing this game on another machine that had same specs with 1xXFX8800GT (NO CRASHES).

I think maybe EA did a mistake on this one? And afaik Carbon is not a major thing and probably the most "crashing" game that came out in 2006. A lot of people had problems with this game. Either we wait for next patch, or next NFS game?

    Suggestions:
    1. Try running the game on low graphics, (even for the hardcore machines) just to see if it's rendering related.
    2. Remove all drivers of your graphics card first and then try latest or the minimum driver that works for NFSC.
    3. Take out your components, clean them and re-seat them.
The last and most severe suggestion is:
    4. Try reinstalling you Windows after doing step 3..

And for you NVIDIA users don't forget to check the 3D profiles, sometimes it helps a lot. (I don't know about ATI).

I bought this game and I own alot of EA games.

    1. EA doesnt have widescreen support so i had to patch that up
    2. Every time i win a boss race, it doesnt save and then it crashes to the Desktop.

This is dead set bloody annoying. I own the G25 racing wheel and this game is by far the most fun to play.

I have tried running this game on the shittest settings, lowest resolutions, in window mode, in windows 2000 mode. Nothing works. Im beginning to feel its XP is crap with dual core.

I think I fixed it!! Guys try these:

    1. install patch 1.4
    2. disable network cards (disable internet access)
    3. launch nfs-carbon.
    4. If you have multi-core CPU, press ctrl-alt-del, right click on nfsc process, set affinity, set it to use 1 CPU only.

I've had 0 crashes after I've done these.
    Have fun!

    People,
This indicates only ONE logical problem.
The GAME is buggy. The crashes are because the program is issuing commands that cannot be executed with MOST configurations.
It is not YOUR systems fault, It may be DIRECTX10 or Vista (admin) commands it is issuing(as those appear to be the only working scenarios. When THIS many people have a problem, it points a single finger to the manufacturer and their greed in releasing a product that has not been successfully tested. Shame on EA.
