Nvidia New Control Panel Problem

I just updated the graphic card driver installed on my system (Nvidia Forceware) to use the latest WHQL version available for download from Nvidia Site (it’s 93.71) for Win32 .. and .. unlike the previous 8x.xx version .. this version caused a small problem for me, because of their new control panel

Okay, the exact problem can be described like this :

  • I uninstalled the previous 84.21 (non WHQL) forceware driver that is already installed and reboot my computer
  • Then i installed the new 93.71 .. (not restarted yet)
  • Guess what happen next ? the new Nvidia Driver caused a major slowdown to my computer which force me to restart my computer
  • After restarting the problem seems to be gone ..
  • But because i don’t really like the Nvidia Icon which is located at my system tray, i decided to go to the Display Properties and reconfigure everything as necessary ..
  • And at that time i saw a new control panel icon … and decided to click it to see what the new control panel from Nvidia does …
  • After clicking on the new control panel .. instead of seeing the new control panel, i got a major slowdown again just like before (i already wait for about 10 minutes but the new nvidia control panel didn’t appear) .. but this time instead of restarting my computer i decided to logoff and re-login .. and the problem seems to be disappear
  • Because i’m curious of the new control panel and i really want to see it, i decided to open it again .. and got the same problem ..

Because i already found the real culprit behind this problem, i decided to switch the Nvidia New Control Panel into the Old Control Panel Type (you can do it easily by changing the Control Panel Type in Nvidia Display Properties) .. and the problem seems to be disappear, but unlike the previous 8x.xx version, everytime you tried to open some of the configuration panel you’ll get a short delay .. and i’m pretty sure this is caused by the new control panel

Okay because i’m curious because i can’t see the new nvidia control panel, i tried searching the web for this information .. and .. found nothing :-( .. so i decided to go to the Nvidia Forums to see if there’s someone that is experiencing the same problem like me and ifound one with the only differences he is using a high end card

The conclusion is … if you can’t see the new Nvidia Control Panel or the new nvidia control panel doesn’t load for you .. try updating your Windows XP into SP2 (i’m using Windows XP SP1) ..

Note : The truth is i haven’t updated my nvidia driver since the last unofficial version (84.21) and i didn’t know that Nvidia introduce the new control panel until i installed the 93.71 version ..

Yet Another Note : I’m still using the old SP1 and everything works fine with the only exception i’ll get a short delay when opening the control panel and i can’t see the new nvidia control panel … that’s it ;-)

Just wait until you have a high end card like my new 8600 and try and use TV out via the new control panel (no ability to switch to old CPL in the latest NVidia drivers!) with the drivers for it, you will have lots and lots of hassle and I am still having problems with the control panel letting me have an ‘apply’ button, giving me the menu options I need which are not there any more and of course the B/W pic, which is the best I can manage on my analogue TV!

I think it’d be better if you upgrade your xp installation to at least XP SP1 .. becaue in normal win xp there’s exist a very critical bugs (it can delete your files / directory)

    Hello Philip,

Yes the only problems when you’re installing 9x.xx version of nvidia forceware driver on SP1. You’ll get a short delay when opening the classic control panel and to make it worse you cant see the new control panel

The only solution if you really want to use the new control panel is upgrading xp to sp2 (i’ve done this) and never had any problem with it :)

ps. the new nv control panel looks great but basically its just the same like the classic control panel .. lol

I have this exact same problem. running SP1 XP.
I noticed that when you try to load the new control panel, it never shows up(although the process appears in task manager). The process “winlogon.exe” then starts to use a mountain of CPU resource while the control panel tries to load. Ending the control panel process will stave the winlogon.exe cpu usage normally within a minute.
Switching to the classic display (go through display properties>settings>advanced) removes this problem, activating the winlogon.exe cpu usage for only a second or 2 before it opens.
