How to use PCSX2 the Playstation 2 Emulator

Now im going to put some guide on how to configure PCSX2 to try out the PS2 Emulator. And since few people are asking is their system can play ps2, then the answer is no. You can’t actually play ps2 games on your pc right now (dunno for a real high end system which is using Dual Core Processor, SLI Graphics Card, etc, but to most users just wait for it), but if you want to help the PCSX2 team, you can do it by testing out PCSX2 and reporting any bugs you found to them.
First you must have PS2 Bios in order to try out the PCSX2 (you can find it easily on the internet) ;) and dont forget to put it into Bios Directory in your PCSX2 Directory
and the next step would be running the PCSX2 Executable and configure it like this (maybe different depending on your computer configuration, especially to those who are using SSE2 Enabled Processor, such as Pentium 4, Athlon64, etc)
1. Configuration Screen of PCSX2
2. Graphic Plugin Configuration Screen
3. Controller Configuration (since i dont own a joystick, im using Keyboard)
4. CDVD Plugin Configuration
Note: if you don’t have ASPI installed on your system use Win2k/XP IOCTL SCSI Command and set it into your DVD Rom Drive (if you’re not using ISO Image)
5. The next step would be putting your PS2 Games on your DVD ROM and choose to Run CD from File Menu … and pray hope it’ll work :P and in my case i was running Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi PAL Version
And that’s it … you’re finished ;)
Note: If you got an error message saying error opening gs plugin or something like that, most likely you’re trying to use ZeroGS Plugin and your vga card is not a Pixel Shader 2.0 Capable Card (ZeroGS require Pixel Shader 2.0 ++ Capable Card) .. and the only solution is using GSDX Plugin as the graphic plugin or get a new graphic card

hi, cn anyone teach me how to use isos on ps2? iv got the roms the bios and emulator bt cnt start the iso
there are two methods to use Iso's on PCSX2 ... :
1. Use a Virtual CD Software like Daemon Tools (freeware for personal use) or other virtual cd software ;) and configure pcsx2 cd drive to use the virtual drive
2. Configure pcsx2 cdvd plugins to use any *iso* plugins name
that's all ;)

btw if i wan't to use the PCSX2 i have to use PCSX2 TLB instead of normal PCSX2 because the program can't find my name. I have to set in memory... Can you tell me where i do this because i don't understand the explanation.

If you don't have enough physical memory / RAM .. the only way to run pcsx2 is by running the TLB version called pcsx2t.exe located at the pcsx2 directory

anyway here's the answers :
1. Do you mean ? your DVD Rom drive ? if that's the case set the CDVD Plugins to use your DVD Rom drive (in picture #1)
2. Yes, you can create ISO of your DVD Game by using CloneCD, Alcohol, Nero,etc (the recommended tools are CloneCD and Alcohol)
3. Hm.. i dont have that games in my playstation 2 so i don't know about that beside i only own Japan and US Bios
4. I dont understand what do you mean by XBox controller ??

man.. i'm trying to get my Pcsx2 to work but it ain't working man
so like, i put up ran the executable, like the non water thing or w/e.. and like i keep getting a message saying,
Pcsx2 needs to allocate physical memory in order to execute faster. Enter the windows username you wish this privilege to be enabled for.

i think its the user name that i use to get on windows.. but like i put that on, and it dun work... and if i put it in right it says...
Failed adding SE_LOCK_MEMORY privilege, please check the local policy. Go to security settings ->Local Policies->User Rights. THere should be a "Lock pages in memory". Add your user to that and log off/on. This enables pcsx2 to run at real-time by allocating physical memory. Also you can try Control Panel->Local security Policy->... (this does not work on Windows XP Home) (zerofrog)

never mind about my last comment. i figured it out. but what i can't figured out is when i put in contra shattered soldier it's running but it doesn't show up on my screen. could it be because im running it on a 1.3 gig speed
Other than fast processor speed (above 2GHz) you'll need to have a really good graphic card and support Pixel Shader 2.0

Just like crazy gamer said, you can find alot of iso using google or another search engine, but one thing for sure .. you can find it easily in various torrent site ;)

Hey Reaper-X I have alot of torrents but I dont know how to use it...If somebody can tell me a site where I can find DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi iso(without torrents)...That's for anybody who search a PCSX2 bios (especially SpIder,an romanian "brother",I think)...TRY BEARSHARE, TYPE PS2 BIOS SELECT THE TYPE OF PCSX2 EMULATOR AND YOU GOT IT.
Dunno where to get tenkaichi but maybe try searching around torrents link and you can find one if you're lucky .. btw if you could be specific about the torrent problem maybe i can help you ;)

well i have the cd (dvd) actually :D beside like i said before, i was using unlimited internet connection which is only 2GB / month .. so i never download/upload any iso, movie (except small movie) ... beside if you were from my country, you can buy the ps2 dvd for really cheap price (you're not gonna believe it if i tell you the actual price) .. lol .. but one thing for sure 10 years old boy can buy a ps2 cd / dvd with his own money in my country :D

i dont think there's a place to download extremely big files other than torrents or p2p so the only way to download iso is using torrent (which is the best) :P
btw have you set the port forwarding correctly? because if its not done properly you can only download torrents file at low speed

Well it's gonna be real hard when trying to use Keyboard to play DBZ beside i was playing this game using my ps2 console and of course that means im using Joystick. :P

you can always use a Converter to connect your ps2 / gaming console joystick into your Computer (mostly its a USB port)

well .. just as i said before that this emulator is still in progress and not all games works fine as it should .. beside ... you'll really need an extremely powerfull pc and using a graphic card with minimum of pixelshader 2.0

One note: e-mail message can't be more than 10 Mb, may be you can compress it to volumed archive (splitted), something around 6-7Mb per file and send it as one file - one message.

i got the bios "SCPH1001.BIN" and i put that in the bios folder and set the bios directory in the cofig_
but it still says cannot load bios .".c:\XXX\XXx\pcsx2" wat u think is da problem?
Hm ... more likely it caused by misconfiguration or incorrect bios file, because by only putting the bios file in the bios directory (for example c:\pcsx2\bios\SCPH1001.bin} without editing the bios path, pcsx2 will be able to detect that automatically

Well torrent is the number one source for a really big material such as ps2 isos :D .. just search for a torrent site and you'll come up with a big list of ps2 isos ;)

Sorry dont have those bios version, but if you want to create ISO easily (and if you're using original PS2 CD/DVD) ... your best bet is by using Alcohol 120 .. unfortunately its not free

Well there's no need to configure / set bios directory as long as you put it in bios directory under your pcsx2 directory .. for example C:\pcsx2\bios\

If you need to choose a specific path as a directory, you can do it easily by changing the bios directory under the configuration page .. btw did you already extract the bios files before putting it into the bios directory of pcsx2 ?

I've got the bios, quite a few of them actually, and all that good stuff... I've got a problem with my graphics configuration, though.
I've got the plugins that come with PCSX2, the GSdx9 and ZeroGS. However, when I try loading up my ISO, it always has a problem about the graphics configuration...
Somtimes it is about the Pixel Shader for GSdx9, which I can't do anything about, since there's no dropdown box for me to change that with. For ZeroGS, it just says "GS not working" or something.
I tried an older version of GSdx9, and I got the Pixel Shader to go to 2... but then whenever I tried loading the game, it said something about an error in reading a symbol.

Well that's easy just put the .bin file into bios directory of pcsx2 and configure it

If you're not using a pixel shader 2 capable video card / direct x 9 compatible vga card and you're trying to use ZeroGS plugin, you'll get an error message. so try using GSDX9 plugin instead of ZeroGS and don't forget to configure it
and don't forget that GSDX has 2 version, the first is for SSE2 capable processor (intel pentium 4, sempron and athlon 64) and the other is non SSE2 capable processor (pentium 3, athlon xp series) .. so try using only one of the GSDX version

What version of PCSX2 do you use again? Cuz 0.9.1 can't detect the BIOS

eh ? dunno why you're choosing the old version of pcsx2 but i think the main problem is that you're using incorrect bios files, because if you already has the correct ps2 bios then you can use it on any version (although the latest bios version is always better) .. for example i already own the bios since pcsx2 0.x (forgot the exact number of the old version) and it can be detected correctly until now ;)
but if you still insist on using the old pcsx2 version, just post it again here and i'll upload it :) .. or try searching the pcsx2 website just in case they have a copy too
let me try one more time and see if anything works, then I'll ask you to send it. Btw, the website doesn't give 0.8.1 anymore.

That's the problem. When I try using GSdx9 with the SSE (I have a Pentium 4), there's no drop down box that lets me change to Pixel Shader 2.0 or higher.
What VGA card you're using ? if you're using Pentium 4 as your processor then there's no problem for you to choose SSE2 version instead of SSE version ;)
btw GSDX only support Pixel Shader 1.1 (Geforce 4 titanium and below support pixel shader 1.3) and if you want to choose pixel shader 2 or already has a pixel shader 2.0 capable vga card then you should use ZeroGS

I have the default graphics controller that came with my Dell Dimension... intel Graphics Controller. The computer is about 4-5 years old if that tells you anything.
When I try configuring the graphics plugin for GSdx9 SSE2, it doesn't have anything in the Pixel Shader box except for "Fixed Pipeline(bogus)," so I can't change it to 1.1, 2, 3, or anything.

aah .. now i see that you're using an onboard graphic card, try using Fixed Pipeline (but i still cant guarantee you can use pcsx2) because intel onboard graphic doesnt have pixel shader 1.1 ++ .. and although you can use the fixed pipeline you're going to get really low frame rate .. the only thing i can suggest is get a new graphic card :(

What bios version you're using and are you sure it's the correct bios ? btw try using GSDX first and see if that error message still appear or not

if the game you're trying to play required some patches try downloading it from the pcsx2 forum, and if you're lucky you might find it
and if you need to speed up process, that's depend on your computer hardware but the most important thing is if you already using a very high end computer and still getting low framerate, the only solution is .. wait for another release of pcsx2

Depending on your VGA card and your processor, if you're sure that you're already using SSE2 and your graphic card already pixel shader 2.0 + and you still get low frame rate, then just wait for another release of pcsx2

Dont know about that because i dont have Dragon Ball Budokai 3 (i only own Tenkaichi) :( ... btw as far as i know that at the current pcsx2 version, you cant get a high frame rate no matter how good your hardware

I have downloaded pcsx2 0.9.1 but it doesnt have memory card,and when i put my ps2 dvd smackdown here comes the pain and click on run cd it asks for select iso file..
I have run pcsx2t.exe, when i started pcsx2.exe i was asked to log off and then start pcsx2 again after allocating memory, and then i started pcsx2.exe after log off it says failure to allocate memory..,

Sorry for late reply (well i think you already knew that i live at different timezone) .. anyway .. most of the problem caused is that you didnt configure the CDVD Plugin correctly. So try checking the CDVD Plugin first and see if its using your DVD Rom path or not.

Well it seems you're not using the correct CDVD Plugin, try using PEOPS CDVD Plugin if you want to play ps2 games using your DVDRom drive instead of ISO files :)

I got the bios now but...
I made "bios like files" to start as text files. I put your bio files in Pcsx2\bios
but im not sure does bios work. I dont know how to reset as "unknown aplication"... Still, i put USA v01.60(07/02/2002) console bios like the one you have on screenshot so.. any more ideas?
i think if you create screenshot and give me the screenshot of your pcsx2 complete configuration, including the error message. so I can understand what is the actual problem you're experiencing right now
btw try to send the screenshot to my email address and compress it using JPG format (do not use BMP format because im not using a high speed internet connection like you guys) ... :)
as a side note that bios works fine and have been tested ;)
and do i need anything else with your bios file inside bios folder because when i have only your bio file (( as in "open as text file" )) inside bios folder it dosent shows any bios in pscx2 emulator
Based on your screenshot, actually the main problem is you didnt extract the bios file .. because you just put it there without extracting it first, pcsx2 cant read it .. btw to extract it you can use Winrar (if you're using winrar 3.4x and above) or you can use 7zip archiver directly from http://www.7zip.org

so then a box comes up to pick a bios in the folder but when i pick the bios no matter which one i pick it says that it encountered a serious error and needs to close. i know i extracted the bios into the bios folder but it continues to not work if anyone knows about this please tell me.

Btw .. have you tried checking the game compatibility list at pcsx2 site ? also most people who have emailed me before and sending screenshot of their hardware, are still using an onboard graphic card .. and the answer is if you're running onboard graphic card .. unfortunately you cant use pcsx2 :(
also if you're sure, that you're not using onboard graphic card .. and you're not using Pentium4 / athlon64 based processor, try using the SSE version instead the SSE2 version :D
for all i noe is that im running a p4 comp wif a geforce 6200...
that's quite good card, but as the next step it'd require you to check their compatibility list first and see if its playable or not :)

ZeroGS require VGA Card with Pixel Shader 2.0 / Vertex Shader 2 ... btw if you're using Onboard VGA card .. im sorry you cant run pcsx2 ...
and to fix the error message you must know about your vga card first and its capabilities. And because of that error message, i knew that you're not using Pixel Shader 2 capable card, then the other way to run pcsx2 is by using GSDX plugin that has texture bug and much slower than ZeroGS

The simple explanation for Onboard VGA is Built In VGA Card that is already available in on your Motherboard chipset, btw GeForce 4 MX 440 doesnt have pixel shader nor vertex shader 2 specification, and its categorized as low end vga card .. you can try searching for its specification on the internet easily ..

If i recall correctly, breath of fire 3 is a Playstation game not a Playstation 2 game .. and if its a Playstation Game you should use ePSXe to play it .. (note: try searching for epsxe on this site)

Well although the error can be various, but the main problem is :
- Your card doesnt support Direct X 9 (i mean internally / hardware)
- Even if you can play pcsx2, you'll experience really low framerate because of your vga card .. even the Geforce 4 TI (Titanium) series cant handle it, and your best bet is upgrade your card .. but i dont think its necessary to buy new card just to play emulator on your pc
- Just like i said in this post above, you'll need a high end computer to use pcsx2 even with that extreme spec, some games will be at low framerate because its still not supported yet
and some other notes :
- If you're not using SSE2 capable processor, dont try to use the SSE2 plugin
- Create the PS2 ISO Image instead of using it directly from your DVD Rom drive
- PCSX2 is still not stable yet

its the setting i used on my computer, if you want to get more speed and without texture bug caused by GSDX 0.9 then you should use ZeroGS

It's a 3D DBZ GAME for PC like Tenkaichi,with super saiyan transformation(and with EVOLUTION X patch you'll be able to transform to SSJ2 SSJ3,and more powerfull transformation for all 9 characters...and it have Dragonballs with wishes and Shenlong) it's awesome,trust me. :D

Trust me,it's very easy...and after that you will fall in love.You should try it because I say 'you should fall in love' I am not kidding.It can't be comparated with the real PS2 tenkaichi or tenkaichi 2(it's awesome) but it's totaly special.Don't ask me with what ...I should tell you this: you have different attack for each character(and you can controlate the beam by moving the mouse),different transformation(3 transformation per character) and special atacks for each char(like kaioken and ultimate sacrifice), I repeat,trust me, because I am not crazy for every DBZ GAME.

i already read the synopsis of Dragon ball AF .. and i think its to much over powered, for example Goku became Super Saiyan 5 and because he cant hold his power, he became a bad guy .. and vegeta became a good guy this time
also Every Dragon Ball character can do Fusion infinite / several times, so they can combine everyone power into a gigantic power.

Hey, great post btw. I have the PCSX2.0.9.2 version and everything is working fine. the quality seems jagged. the sound is off, and i get choppy visuals(best way to describe it is if you are watching a video with bad codecs )
I can deal with all of that (if i must)
But the real problem is trying to play games using the analog control stick. I don't have a psx controller that i can plug into a usb. I'm stuck with the keyboard. all the buttons work fine. but when trying to 'move' a character in-game when the dpad is disabled is impossible. i cant move my character thus i cant play.
please help.
If its about the choppy visual, that means your computer cant handle it, because pcsx2 require a high end computer (actually extreme) :D .. and as for the keyboard problem, the only thing i can suggest is get a converter so you can use your psx controller on your computer (if you already have psx controller of course) :)

but just like i said before, that pcsx2 need a high end / extreme class graphic card in order to get desirable frame rate (i mean playable frame rate). And if you're using a medium / low class graphic card .. pcsx2 is unplayable on your computer :)

your VGA card doesnt support Vertex Shader 2 and Pixel Shader 2 and the only option you can choose is get a new graphic card or use GSDX Plugin

as for the requirement, pcsx2 really need powerful pc and that's including laptop (a powerful laptop cost a lot more than normal pc) .. beside the original ps2 console is a lot cheaper than buying a high end vga card or laptop :)

if you're using Dual Core processor and 1 Gb of ram i think you've already using a high end graphic card (as long as you're using Geforce FX and up, you dont have to worry about Pixel Shader issue, etc) .. but if you could give me a detailed description maybe i can help you :)
what did u mean by detailed description?....if ur asking about my config. on psxe2 im using the same as urs cuz i followed ur example, im using gsdx9( msvc 14.00) 0.9.0 and p.e ops cddvd with the same config as urs and i downloaded dragon quest 8 from torrent so i have the iso and i put it in the bios folder and wen i try to execute it says its unable to load bios and it cant run without that and then it closes....is my config wrong? or did i forget to download a patch or sum sort? i even mounted the iso with deamon tools and chose the drive on the p.e ops cddvd config but i still get the same thing so what do u think?

Yes, of course it works although only few games are playable .. but you'll need an extremely powerful pc not just a standard / mainstream class pc :( .. as for the game itself, you can see it on the pcsx2 compatibility list

Ah .. its easy, just put it into the bios directory and then run pcsx2 :D .. but most bios file already compressed using compression program such as winrar (rar) or 7zip (7z) .. so you must extract it first before you can use it ;)

btw .. i've tested 092 .. and like the previous version you'll need a really high end pc to be able to get desirable FPS :D
as for getting a ps2 .. and to play burned game .. well you'll need to install the modchip on your ps2 first .. or you can also try using Swap Disc (in this case Swap Magic) method, if you dont want to use modchip (but i prefer to use modchip rather than Swap Magic) :P
And my information of PCSX2 0.9.2 it's a lie because it was writed by a nOOb ( crazy) on a forum in my country...I mean about PCSX2 0.9.2 can't emulate PS2 games with a PS2 speed.Sorry for that error!:D
And I've heard about mod chip and I should buy a finished modchip instaled PS2.It's a bit expensive but I don't want to pay THESE MUCH MONEY for all original money...That's the PS2 handicap,it can't play burned games without modchip (wich is a bit expensive in my country) :P

btw if you dont know how to install modchip by yourself, i think it'd be better for you to get a preinstalled modchip by technician (beside using Swap Magic is just not the best way to play ps2 games) :P
and dont forget to ask the technician first about the modchip name, if you're going to get a preinstalled modchip (unless you want to open your ps2 console later) ;)

i have downloaded pcsx2 emu and installed everything is working fine but when i try to load the game it uses up mine cpu upto 100% and the game loading is so slow it only reads the dvd rom on 4x i have used alcohol 120% to mount the iso image file and play.

The pcsx2 framerate is depend on the vga card itself, if you're using high end card then you can get good framerate :)

btw the only thing you should use is by only using ZeroGS as the graphic plugin (FSAA enabled or disabled) and play the game using ISO images. Because if that doesnt work for you then that means you'll have to wait for another pcsx2 release

btw if you're using downloaded games just make sure you're already configuring the cdvd plugin to point to your virtual drive, and about the plugins its already included by default by pcsx2 release (but you might try downloading the non sse2 version just in case your processor didnt support SSE2 instruction)

Btw do you have ASPI installed on your system ? because if you're going to use ASPI in Windows you'll need it to install it first (you can search my site for this ASPI thing) .. or you can use SPTI if you dont have aspi installed on windows xp :-) (read the note at this post)

I just add you into my msn contact list, but i dont get any respond from youfinished :-)yo i just downloaded the emulator and some bios but i put them in the directory and they arent working is there any way you could just send me the emulator and the bios id really appreciate it bc i have the bios now its just when i go to configure the bios blank is empty.
the bios didnt show up in the configuration window ? btw what is the bios filename ? is it xxxxx.bin and the filesize is 4096KB ? because if you're using the correct bios the filesize for each bios file should be 4096KB :-)

btw does pcsx2 close itself immediately when you try to run it ? if that's the problem, try running pcsx2t.exe / pcsx2t instead and see if its worked for you ;-)
hi, i use the ZeroGS graphics plugin for FFX and the enviroment is definitly not wat it supose to look like and when i try use the GSdx9 n run it, it just closes pcsx. Any ideas wat im doing wrong?
Pcsx2 close by itself when using GSDX ? what is the GSDX configuration ? and which ps2 executable did you use when running pcsx2 ? (some people experiencing problem when not using the TLB executable)
It only closes when i tick NLOOP 0 hack (fixes ffx), if i untick that it runs the same like ZeroGS with lots of see thru enviroment
well .. unfortunately if that's the problem then there's nothing you can do as for now, because if ZeroGS is still showing the same problem .. the only thing you can do is wait for an updated version of ZeroGS or another update of pcsx2 :-)

well reaper I mean it will open the PCSX and I can still use the program.
but when I want to play a game I click on Run cd/Dvd or execute and the program shuts down.
I just dont get it. I use both of the PCSX things and they both do the same thing.
Does this have to do with my configuration or what?

O and the only step I did differently then yours was on the CDVD Plugin Configuration.
What I did differnet was on the entry that says pick drive It dosent give me the option to pick ASUS DVD it only gives me the option to pick E, D, and F drives. So could that be my problem?

Actually ASUS DVD is my DVDRom drive, and yours might be different. But if you still experiencing the same problem try using the IOCTL from the Peops CDVD plugin configuration and set it to read from your DVD Rom drive or your virtual dvd rom drive :-)

I mean it runs so slow and the characters have black spots and stuff like that. My comp has Intel Pentium 4, 3.00GHz 3.01GHz 2.00 GB of ram and my graphic card is a Radeon x1900xt (very good).

Well .. if you get slow frame rate, although you're using a high end graphic card .. try playing Final Fantasy X (if you own FFX) first and see if its play better than the game you're trying to play right now
and thats because FFX (AFAIK) is the most supported games in PCSX2

hey reaper its me again soz. i cant get my frame rates 2 stay on 30 and my pc stats are amd 64 3500+ geforce4 6600 golden sample, 1gb ram ddr 400, im sure thats enough for ffx im using zerogs kosmos 0.96.0 graphics. gsd9 just looks funny and it runs even slower. o yes and when i save then i load i have no sound why is that plz help plz plz plz.

Um .. have you tried disabling antialiasing ? or bilinear filtering ? or you could play around with its setting
as a note, there is a person that is playing FFX before and using a really extreme configuration (try looking at previous comment page here, he / she is from Australia and his / her nickname is Iori)
