PCSX2 the real Playstation 2 Emulator

PCSX2 is a PlayStation 2 emulator for Windows and Linux, started by the same team that brought you PCSX (a Sony PlayStation 1 emulator)
The PCSX2 project attempts to allow PS2 code to be executed on your computer, thus meaning you can put a PS2 DVD or CD into your computers drive, and boot it up!
The project has been running for a little over four years now, and since it's initial release has grown in compatibility. From initially just being able to run a few public domain demos, it's current state enables many games to boot and actually go in game, such as the 'famous' Final Fantasy X or Devil May Cry 3.
Since i’ve been getting some visitors who’s searching for a freeware PS2 emulator, i’m going to post the one and only REAL PS2 Emulator that’s under heavy development and available on the internet as freeware / open source unlike others which is fake (trojan, worms, spyware, adware, etc). And this emulator name is PCSX2.
This open source project at first can only play homebrew / homemade games not a commercial games but now most of commercial games like Final Fantasy, Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi, etc can be played on this emulator, although you’ll need a really POWERFULL Machine (computer) to play games in desirable frame rate.
Btw with my current computer setup, i wasnt able to play ps2 games at desirable frame rate / at very low frame rate, and my computer setup is like this :
- Athlon XP (Barton) 2600+ Processor
- ASUS V8460 Ultra Deluxe – Nvidia GeForce 4 TI 4600
- 1 GB PC3200 DDR – 2 x 512 MB (Dual DDR Activated)
That’s the most important part of your computer if you want a desirable frame rate (30++ FPS) to play ps2 games normally
But to play a ps2 games you’ll need to have a PS2 BIOS first, just search for it. But remember its illegal to download a ps2 bios if you don’t own a real ps2 :P … and if you need some help on how to configure pcsx2, you can read my posts on how to use pcsx2 the playstation 2 emulator

I downloaded pcsx2-0.9.1_setup.exe and then installed PCSX2 0.9.1. I downloaded the following BIOS's from http://www.driverguide.com and saved them to the c:\Program files\PCSX2\BIOS folder:
(1) 03/06/2004 0250 199,680 rom1.bin
(2) 18/10/2000 1606 4,194,304 scph10000.bin
(3) 05/05/2002 0330 4,194,304 scph3004R.bin
(4) 27/06/2003 2051 4,194,304 scph39001.bin
(5) 23/07/2006 0607 4 scph39001.MEC
(6) 23/07/2006 0608 1,024 scph39001.NVM
Then I inserted Grand Theft Auto - Vice City CD in my cd/dvd drive. The game starts and stops at the screen which displays "Memory card (ps2)/1 7,998KB No Data". Specs of my system:
- Windows XP professional Service Pack 2
- 1 GB DDR 400MHZ
- Intel P. IV CPU, 2.4 GHZ
- ATI RADEON 9600 Series VGA card, 128MB
I have read your pcsx2_guide.htm but no solution. Please advise.
unfortunately not all commercial ps2 games can be played using that emulator, as you can see on http://www.pcsx2.net/compat.php?p=4&!=g and http://www.pcsx2.net/compat.php?p=5&!=g ..
i suggest before trying out ps2 games try checking http://www.pcsx2.net/compat.php and see if your games listed as playable ;) but ifs its not there then you can try it by yourself and if it works or not post the result there :)
HELP ME what is the usual frame rate for a ps2 game couse i have super dragon ball z but the game starts but it those not load anymore the image remains white what sould i do???

nice, but I can't even get mine to work... I go to load bios throught the configuration window and then it complains that the pixel shader is lower than supported...

Actually every games should be played above 30++ fps , and just as i said before that this pcsx2 emulator still not perfect, so there’ll be some games that cant be played.
Try using Software Renderer from GSDx Graphic Plugin, or try upgrading your graphic card

hi i don't think you can help me with but i after long hours on getting this baby up and running i put it my game "way of the samurai 2" it loads up the first bits, asking my launage, picture settings after it brings up to company name "capcom" and then another "Spike" then is just freezes on "Spike". i checked the disc and it dont look badly damaged i also cleaned it, what do youthink it might be?
Which version you're trying to play ? is it PAL or NTSC ? if its PAL version (although im not playing it on PCSX2) because of low frame rate, its working on PCSX2 0.9.1 but if your version is NTSC just wait for PCSX2 0.9.2 (current version 0.9.1) http://www.pcsx2.net/compat.php?p=1&!=w ;)
its pal and it still dose the same thing i think it might be the disc but it gose through the hole start up asking for my language, then if i want 50Hz or 60z and then comes up with capcom to spike and freezes there, i would test on my ps2 but i don't have 1 thats y i got PCSX2 in the first place =D

1. does it matter where your BIOs came from(example: North America BIOs and Europe BIOs )

3. If any of you are from Japan could you check and see if "Final Fantasy XII" is compatable with PCSX2 0.9.1 and 0.9.2 when it comes out...(*drools*) ^¬^
1. The official pcsx2 documentation said that if you're using the recent bios, it gives you more compatibility in pcsx2 ;)
2. There's alot on the internet (although only a few sites that gives you the real bios)

Hi, i've got some problems regarding the PCSX2,
Its not playing the DVDs eventhough i've got myself some working BIOS
well it did mentioned when i run a disc that,
rom2 and erom are missing...are these essential for running the games as well?
pc specs:
Pentium 4, 3 GHz
256 Mb RAM
Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 128 MB RAM
That's depend on what bios version you're using, for example im using a bios version that's not using ROM2.bin or ROM*.bin and can see dragon ball budokai tenkaichi in action :) ... so try using another BIOS first ;)

i dont think you can run pcsx2 on normal/desirable frame rate using that system but just in case you want to try pcsx2 ... check your email address ;)
I've got 3 working BIOS:
scph10000.bin - japan
scph39001.bin - Europe
scph3004R.bin - USA
and there are other files that i place in the BIOS folder as well: (not sure if they're even used)
scph3004R.MEC
scph3004R.NVM
scph39001.MEC
scph39001.NVM
rom1.bin
Just as i said before, that depends on the bios itself .. but one thing for sure is SCPH10000.bin and SCPH39001.bin doesnt require rom1.bin ;) because i can run pcsx2 without rom1.bin , etc ... but just in case you need it later just keep it in your HDD :D

are you sure, you already set the pcsx2 to read from the virtual drive (if you're using virtual drive) or read from your dvd rom drive ?
PCSX2 0.9.1 bla bla bla.....
Doesn't work. On the pcsx web i saw that games were playable and i tried out tekken which was noted to be playable the tekken 4 doesn't work at all. I tried to play kof 03 which went up to character selection without the sound.
I think the pcsx is just a time pass. If you really want a ps2 emulator to play games then look for it next year u might find one but at the moment its worth less

Whoa quite a monster you have there, with just another upgrade to the vga card you get the real monster .. lol .. but that's true that pcsx2 cant play commercial pcsx2 games correctly as for now .. so for those who want to play ps2 emulator on their pc should wait for another release from pcsx2 team ;)
but if there's someone who is using SLI Card combined with Dual Core processor and above 1GB RAM, i'd like to know about pcsx2 performance on their pc (but if you already have this then there's no need for you to use emulator) :D
Hi I am using Zero GS KOSMOS on my playstation 2 emulator and it works! Even though I do not know if I had the proper nvidia Geforce installed. I did not buy this card, I downloaded it from the internet. The emulator goes at about 50++++ fps at maximum, but ingame and at the starting credits, the emulator slows down and gradually always goes back up to at least 30+++++fps. But there is no sound at the starting credits! There are lines in screen when playing DBZ Budokai and since there is no analog stick, I cannot move if I play Kingdom Hearts. Help would be appreciated.

Most probably you're using GSDX Plugin 0.9.0 that has a bug. Unfortunately if you dont own pixel shader 2.0 capable graphic card, GSDX is the only solution for those who are not using pixel shader 2.0 capable card but it'll produce color corruption .. the only solution is wait for another release of gsdx plugin or pcsx2 release
How do i know what pixel shader i have?
My PC:
AMD Athlon 2100+
Ati Radeon 9000 64mb
512MB DDR ram
80GB Hard DIsk Space
DVD RW / CD RW
Your vga card only support pixel shader 1.4 but it still categorized as low end graphic card because of various reason (im not talking about price but the internal hardware) :(
Btw if you want to lookup your computer hardware capabilites, you can do it easily by using the above steps :
- If you dont want to use internet connection or get an in depth hardware information, you can use SiSoft Sandra (freeware and shareware available) .. or you can use Lavalyst Everest (freeware / shareware dunno if its still free or not)

- The easiest way is open the manufacture website, for example in this case is .. here

Sorry about that, Reaper-X. There is an analog function by using your mouse that I read on the official PCSX2 website and I don't have a dual core processor computer, which means if I use bilinear filtering or Anti-Analising on Zero GS KOSMOS which fixes the DBZ problem, speed decreases. GUH!!!(This is not a question response. I am in Canada right now, so you might notice that my flag icon will change.)

Well actually im not using the original copy :P .. btw if you're going to play *cough* *cough* game on ps2 console directly, the only way to do it is :
- Use a modchip
- Use Swap Magic
that's the only way to do it
Where can i download Swap Magic? or modchip what is it how to get it?
Swap Magic cant be downloaded because if you download it somewhere, you'll have to burn it using CDR and that means its a pirated copy too and can be used on your console .. so you'll have to buy it
as for modchip, this is the easiest way to play *cough* *cough* game but it'll cost you, try opening http://www.dms3.com

try checking the pcsx2 compatibility list page first, and did you extract the bios first ? (some people just put it directly without extracting it first)
what do you mean extract the bios how do you do this etc also now that i have the game in it goes reallybad and slow etc
if you're able to play the game then that means you've extracted the bios from the compressed 7zip archive .. but if its slow then the only thing you should do is check the pcsx2 compatibility page .. and of course that's depend on your computer hardware (you must using a high end computer) ... and in this case, your processor .. and your graphic card

I Have installed Pcsx2 on my computer and I have also found the Bios. Actually I am trying to made the game DBZ budokai 2 playable with my config but I can't. This is my config:

Do you know if it is possible with some patches and an appropriate configuration of Pcx2 make this game full playable ?
I havent tried budokai 2 because i dont have it, as for patch try checking the pcsx2 forum just in case they've released the patch for it

i have pcsx2 0.9.2 i play dragonball z budokai 2 and 3 herre is my pc spec: AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 2.2GHz, 1024MB RAM, PowerColor Radeon X850XT 256MB,GDDR3,256bit but when i run pcsx2 thats ok FPS is fine above 120FPS, but when i run game menu fps i a little lower 50fps or something, when i play game the fps is only 20. And i have tryed everything all plugins all pixel tryed nothing helps to gett better fps, so do anyone has a simple 64bit processor tell me if some games can be able to run. The only problem could be my cpu. Does anyone know what spec i need. I think to run pcsx2 you should have AMD Dual-Core . That is only problem.

there you vil be able to run pcsx2 fine and just download the newest verison of pcsx2 0.9.2 http://www.pcsx2.net and use ZeroGS graphics plugin 0.96.0 its the fastest graphics plugin.

Hm .. that's strange .. btw do you have Antialiasing enabled on the Graphics plugin ? if its enabled try disabling it to improve performance

hahaha .. lol ... try looking at the FPS / Framerate at the top left side very carefully and you'll find the answer easily ;)

[ A ] it's easy .. he / she recorded it, and using Video Editing Program, he / she increase the Video Framerate so it looks like he can play dragon ball normally using PCSX2 ;)

Well .. from ZeroGS Graphics plugin there's a record to AVI option and you can use it to record everything :)
and for the next step, just download various video editing program, such as Virtual Dub .. and increase the frame rate of the video file .. and you're done :D
but it was a fake framerate, the actual in game frame rate is still below average .. and that's why he said that media files are faster than pcsx2 framerate :)
i downloaded it that Virtual Dub but i still dont know how to fix it, should i run a sample avi video or ???
you can press CTRL+R or choose Video -> Frame Rate at the toolbar .. and enter your desired video frame rate .. that's it :)

okey reaper x i wait for real pcsx2 simulator but i takes time. But what if my cpu is not good enough. Maybe the dual-core is recommanded for pcsx2, Play Station 2 is strong machine. And i dont know what is system requirements for pcsx2???
hm .. about the pcsx2 requirement, probably you'll need a high class gpu, dual core preferable, and high amount of ram .. but it'd be best for you to get a real ps2 console because its going to be a lot cheaper (if you're thinking of getting a new peripheral for your computer dedicated to pcsx2) :)
I dont need play station 2 i already have play station 3. My play station 2 is resold. I just want to play some games not all, on play station 2.

btw if you want to play dragonball series on pcsx2 then i think i'd be best for you to wait into the next pcsx2 release ;) .. because only some games are fully playable at the moment (and of course that is using a really high end computer) :)

for example, if you're interested on buying a new ps3 from a retail store / game store here, it'll cost you for about $ 1.263 US .. lol ...
As for about computer well although i prefer software rather than hardware but i know some of it :D (unless you're talking about expensive computer parts) ... hehehe

What is your current pcsx2 configuration ? and have you tried using the non SSE2 plugin because your current processor doesnt support SSE2 intruction :-)

I don't know if this PS2 emulator will work. I wonder if there were missing files in the previous downloads of the emulator, but all I want to do is to play Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. I'll try this one.

I havent tried it yet, but as a note, if the mgs3 status is not playable under pcsx2 compatibility page , then there's nothing you can do :(
